Young, Morris and 4x4 Pick Up Wins at the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers earned three event victories on Saturday at the first Wisconsin Big Ten Midwest Invitational in Chicago, Ill. Hannah Morris (long jump), Amira Young (60m) and the women's 4x400m relay team brought home wins.
Minnesota's first victory of the day came in the form of Hannah Morris who competed in her first meet of the season in the Maroon and Gold. Morris eclipsed six meters to win the event with a mark of 6.02m (19-9), nearly matching her lifetime best of 6.08m. Morris' mark is 28th in the nation so far this year.
On the track the Golden Gophers saw Big Ten champion Amira Young showcase her incredible talent on the straightaway. The Chicago, Ill., native nearly matched her lifetime best by clocking a 7.32 in the final, less than a tenth away from 7.26 back in 2021. Finishing third in the event was sophomore Akilah Lewis who posted a new lifetime best of 7.36 to move into the third slot on the program's top 10 indoor list.
Picking up the final win of the day was the 4x400m relay team of Jayla Campbell, Val Larson, Abigail Schaaffee and Janielle Josephs. The quartet posted a facility record of 3:40.77, the 17th-best time in the nation so far this season.
Although they weren't victories, the Golden Gophers once again had highlight performances from their throws team. Tess Keyzers posted a season-best 20.69m (67-10 3/4) to finish the meet in second while Shelby Frank improved on her top-10 mark from the Minnesota Open to move up to No. 6 in Minnesota history with a toss of 20.66m (67-9 1/2) on Saturday. Additionally the Maroon and Gold had the third, fourth and fifth-place finishers in the women's shot put with Devia Brown's 16.21m (53-2 1/4) as the team's top mark of the day while McKenzie Duwenhoegger posted a new indoor personal best of 15.69m (51-5 3/4).
Other notable performances in Chicago on the track included Maja Maunsbach's runner-up finish in the 60m hurdles (8.66), Janielle Josephs' second place in the 300m (38.68), Abigail Schaaffe's runner-up performance in the 600m (1:31.43) and Jaycie Thomsen's 9:50.03 in the 3000m to finish second. Molly Roach also finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:13.26 while Sophie Schmitz was right behind her at 2:13.44 to finish fifth.
