Gophers Dominate Cyclone Open with 17 Combined Event Victories

1/22/2022 7:38:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- It was a dominant day for the Golden Gopher track and field program at the Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa. The Maroon and Gold combined for 17 victories at the Lied Recreation Center including six different top 26 marks in the nation this year.

Devia Brown's performance was the most notable of the day in the shot put. The Kingston, Jamaica, native launched her farthest mark as a Gopher at 17.08m (56-0 1/2) to win the event. The mark is tied for the fifth-farthest mark in the NCAA this season and is the second best mark in indoor school history, moving her up from the No. 3 spot.

A number of Gophers made big splashes on the track, but none other than Abby Kohut-Jackson. The graduate student picked up two victories on the day in the 1000m and the mile. Her mile time of 4:41.25 proved to be a new personal record and slotted her into the 10th best time in the nation this season.

In the short sprints it was Amira Young who picked up a pair of victories of her own in Ames. She won both the 60m and the 200m at the Cyclone Open and her season-best 200m time of 23.74 put her as the No. 21 ranked individual in the event.

True freshman Nyalaam Jok proved why she is one of the nation's top freshmen high jumpers with her collegiate personal best of 1.77m (5-9 3/4) to win the event on Saturday. Her mark is the 21st best in the nation and ties her with Allison Gerads for fifth in the Gophers indoor record book.

Another Gopher that made leaps and bounds in the record book was Tiera Robinson-Jones in the triple jump. Her 12.54m (41-1 3/4) goes down as the seventh-best indoor mark in school history and is the 26th best mark in the country this season.

Minnesota's final top 25 NCAA performance was from Erin Rediy in the 800m. The sophomore from Downers Grove, Ill., finished in a time of 2:09.76 to earn the victory at the Cyclone Open. Her time goes down as the No. 24 ranked time in the nation this year.

Picking up a trio of victories while competing unattached were Ben Psicihulis, Mike Herauf and Finn Schirmer. Psicihulis posted a 47.61 to win the men's 400m while Schirmer's 8.19 was good enough for the victory in the 60m hurdles. Herauf won the men's pole vault with a vault of 4.90m (16-0 3/4).

Another top 40 national mark was Lexy Berger's 4.07m (13-4 1/4) pole vault to win the event. The mark goes down as her new lifetime best in the event as is the seventh-best mark in school history, breaking a previous two-way tie for eighth that Berger was a part of.

Other notable Minnesota victories included Abigail Schaaffe (400m, 55.13), Bit Klecker (3000m, 9:35.46), Hannah Morris (Long Jump, 5.62m | 18-5 1/4), Shelby Frank (Weight Throw, 19.48m | 63-11) and the women's 4x400m relay (3:45.64).
