1/29/2022 5:51:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
MINNEAPOLIS -- It was yet another dominant weekend of action for the Golden Gopher track and field program at the Jack Johnson Classic and Rod McCravy Memorial meet on Friday and Saturday. As a collective group between the women's team and the unattached men's athletes 17 victories were earned along with a number of top 25 NCAA marks.
On Friday the Gophers had a handful of student-athletes compete, just three in Minneapolis with more competing in Lexington, Ky. Minnesota's first victory of the weekend came in the form of Abigail Schaaffe in the 600m. Her 1:29.42 was good enough for the victory while Val Larson's 1:29.97 was just behind her for the runner-up finish.
Starting Saturday off on the right foot for the Maroon and Gold was Nyalaam Jok, posting a new collegiate best high jump mark of 1.78m (5-10) to bring home the win. Her mark puts her in a tie for 22nd in the nation in the event and tied for fourth in the Big Ten.
Although the performance did not result in a victory, the Golden Gophers put down a huge time in the 4x400m relay to conclude the meet in Kentucky. The squad of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe dropped a 3:38.48, the 13th-fastest time in the nation this year. The performance was good enough for the third-place finish and is the top time in the Big Ten in 2022.
Back in Minneapolis Tess Keyzers posted a season-best mark of 21.00m (68-10 3/4) in the women's weight throw to win the event. That put Keyzers in the top 20 in the nation in the event and it is the second-best mark in the Big Ten this year.
Making a mark on the indoor record book was Jayla Campbell in the women's 400m. The sophomore put down a personal record time of 54.58 to move into the No. 8 spot on the Gophers' indoor top 10 list. It also is good enough for the No. 40 time in the nation and the No. 4 time in the Big Ten this season.
Down in Lexington, after advancing to the 60m final in the preliminary rounds, Amira Young finished as the runner-up in both the 60m as well as the 200m. Her 7.36 out of lane eight was good enough for the finish in the 60m while her 23.91 on Friday also gave her the second-place finish.
Other notable Minnesota victories for the women included Carissa Dock (Mile, 4:58.97 - converted), Tiera Robinson-Jones (Long Jump, 5.58m | 18-3 3/4 and Triple Jump, 12.41m | 40-8 3/4), Devia Brown (Shot Put, 16.63m | 54-6 3/4), Ava Hill (800m, 2:13.24* - converted).
A number of Minnesota student-athletes competed unattached at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday, with a number of them making their season debuts. The first victory of the day came in the form of Matthew Wilkinson in the mile. His converted time of 4:02.81 crushed his previous personal best in the event by nearly six seconds. The runner-up finisher, Jack Manderscheid, also picked up a big-time personal best of 4:03.52.
Shortly after the mile Finn Schirmer picked up another 60m hurdles win. His preliminary time of 8.07 was a new personal best with his 8.10 in the final good enough to earn the victory. Aaron Westmoreland also posted big personal best times in his events. His 6.82 was good enough for second in the 60m while his converted time of 21.70 in the 200m earned him the win.
Also claiming a victories with personal bests was Owen Hoeft in the 800m with a converted time of 1:52.95 while Ben Psicihulis' 47.15 converted time was also a victorious one. Making his debut at the U of MN Fieldhouse was Floyd Whitaker in the triple jump. The Clemonton, N.J., native posted a lifetime best of 15.68m (51-5 1/2) to claim victories in his debut.
