MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field team continued its impressive indoor campaign this weekend at the Gopher Classic (Minneapolis, Minn.) and the Meyo Invite (South Bend, Ind.), picking up 17 total victories between the two meets. A pair of top 10 program marks were put down by Odell Frye (60m) and Abby Kohut-Jackson (3000m) along with a number of personal records.
Kohut-Jackson's performance in the 3000m goes down as the No. 2 time in program history, where she already was sitting with her performance at the Wooo Pig Classic earlier this season. On Saturday the Huxley, Iowa, native dropped her lifetime best time in the event down to 9:04.07, almost six seconds (5.97) better than her previous time, to finish as the Meyo Invitational runner-up in the event. Winning the event was teammate Bethany Hasz, who was making her season-debut in the event after only appearing in the 5000m earlier this season. Hasz's time of 9:02.34 is the 12th fastest time in the nation this season, and first in the Big Ten, while Kohut-Jackson's time is the 15th best, and second best in the conference.
Back in Minneapolis Odell Frye dazzled Minnesota fans with a 7.38 time in the 60m final to win the Gopher Classic. The Waseca, Minn., native, who transferred in from Iowa Central Community College, put down a new lifetime best time to put her name at No. 4 on the Gophers all-time 60m dash list. Frye's time is also good enough for the No. 6 time in the Big Ten this season and puts two Gophers inside the top six in the Big Ten alongside Amira Young at No. 5).
Throughout Saturday Minnesota picked up another 14 victories, all of them coming at the U of MN Fieldhouse. Tess Keyzers tossed a winning mark of 20.70m (67-11) to win the women's weight throw while Devia Brown's 16.96m (55-7 3/4) helped the team sweep the throwing events on the women's side. Another pair of wins came from Bailey Waldhauser (High Jump) and Mara Pletcher (Pole Vault), both firsts for the duo this season in their respective events.
Minnesota had a number of strong unattached performances on Saturday afternoon. Most notably St. Paul, Minn., native Jake Kubiatowicz tossed a lifetime best mark of 20.76m (68-1 1/2) in the men's hammer to win the event going away. The lifetime best mark for Kubiatowicz was nearly four feet better than his previous best mark that he set over two seasons ago at Penn. Mike Herauf won the men's pole vault competition with a vault of 5.12m (16-9 1/2), and took a number of quality attempts over what would be a new lifetime best of 5.22m before ending his day. Aaron Westmoreland threw down a new season best in the 200m, winning the event in a time of 21.92, just 0.09 off his indoor personal best of 21.82 he set in February of 2021.
