Women's 4x4 Sets School Record, Men Begin Outdoor Campaign

MINNEAPOLIS --Ā The University of Minnesota saw a new women's indoor 4x400m relay school record get set on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Tyson Invite, while the men's squad began their outdoor season on the west coast in California.Ā
The squad composedĀ of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail SchaaffeĀ raced to a time of 3:32.94 at the Tyson Invite, posting the eighth-best time in the nation this season and the No. 2 time in the Big Ten. The team broke the previous school record by the team of Kat Keller, Emerald Egwin, Erin Hawkins and Titania Markland back in 2016 at 3:35.33. Campbell started Minnesota off with a 53.89 split off the gun with Josephs taking the baton next, splitting an impressive 52.92. Larson continued the record-breaking run with a 53.99 split while Schaaffe'sĀ 52.16 anchor split brought the team home to its best finish in six years.Ā
The 4x400m squad came on the heels of an impressive Friday where both Campbell and Schaaffe put down top five times in program history in the open 400m. Campbell dropped a 53.97, the fourth-best time in school history, while Schaaffe's 54.04 goes down as the No. 5 time in program history.Ā
On the other side of the country the Golden Gophers saw their men compete for the first time this season in California. At the RCC Early Bird and the CSUN All-Comers the Gophers had a small group of competitors get their outdoor season started off on the right foot. Minnesota picked up three victories at the RCC Early Bird with Carter Hughes (Shot Put - 17.37m), Jake Kubiatowicz (51.39m) and Mike Herauf (4.95m) picking up the wins for the Maroon and Gold. Alstian Walker made his debut with Minnesota in the triple jump, posting an impressive mark of 15.20m (49-10 1/2). At the CSUN All-Comers on Saturday, Minnesota's best performance came from redshirt sophomoreĀ Kostas ZaltosĀ in the hammer throw at 69.58m, just under two meters away from his personal best mark of 71.21m back in 2021.Ā
Back on Friday Minnesota saw another impressive performance out of Bethany Hasz, this time in the 5000m. In Ames, Hasz's time of 15:49.62 goes down as the No. 24 best time in the nation this season. The time goes down as the No. 2 time in the Big Ten this season and helped her finish as the runner-up at the event.Ā
The incredible freshmen duo of Zariyah Black and Maja MaunsbachĀ both reached the Tyson Invite semis with season-best times of 8.51 and 8.54, improving the No. 5 and 6 times in program history where the two already were positioned. The duo finished the meet 14th and 15th overall.Ā
Other notable Minnesota performances throughout the weekend included Amira Young finishing fourth overall at the Tyson Invite in the 60m, nearly matching her season best with a 7.33 in the final. Nyalaam Jok posted a new collegiate best in the long jump with a mark of 5.73m to finish 21st at the event while she also finished as the runner-up in the high jump competition with another 1.77m (5-9 3/4) clearance. Ben Psicihulis posted a new indoor personal best in the 400m at the Iowa State Classic to win the event, finishing in a time of 47.08.Ā

Minnesota wraps up the indoor regular season with the Snowshoe Open back home at the U of MN Fieldhouse on Feb. 18. The Maroon and Gold then will have a week to prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio, from Feb. 25-26.Ā
