Gophers Opening Outdoor Season in Orlando

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers track and field team heads to Orlando, Fla., for the Black & Gold Invite from March 18-19 at the University of Central Florida. The men's and women's program are opening up their outdoor campaign and will compete with the likes of UConn, Kentucky, Michigan, NC State, Vanderbilt and more.
About the 2022 Black and Gold Invite
Heading to the Sunshine State, the Gophers are competing outdoors in Florida for the first time since the Hurricane Invitational in 2019. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault on Friday with running events starting at 4:30 p.m. with the women's 400m hurdles. Saturday's action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with the women's hammer throw while the running events will start at 11 a.m. with the 4x100m relay. Live results are provided by Half-Mile Timing and can be followed throughout the meet. There is no livestream available for the event.

Last Time Out: Gophers Claim Second Straight Big Ten Indoor Title
The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won its second straight Big Ten Indoor Championship at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Golden Gophers scored a total of 102 points to secure the title, holding off the likes of Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. The team win marked Minnesota's sixth indoor and ninth overall Big Ten championship in women's track & field. In fitting fashion, the Golden Gophers 4x400m relay team also won back-to-back indoor titles in a time of 3:34.35. The team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe officially stamped the Gophers team title for the second straight year. In total, Minnesota got scoring contributions from 17 different times and marks with Bethany Hasz scoring a team-high 18 points. After winning the 3000m for the second straight year on Friday, Hasz finished as the meet's runner-up in the 5000m in a time of 16:22.37 while sister Megan Hasz added a bronze medal performance to make a big move late for the team.

Last Time Out: Gopher Men Compete in California
Back in February, Minnesota saw their men compete for the first time in California. At the RCC Early Bird and the CSUN All-Comers the Gophers had a small group of competitors get their outdoor season started off on the right foot. Minnesota picked up three victories at the RCC Early Bird with Carter Hughes (Shot Put - 17.37m), Jake Kubiatowicz (51.39m) and Mike Herauf (4.95m) picking up the wins for the Maroon and Gold. Alstian Walker made his debut with Minnesota in the triple jump, posting an impressive mark of 15.20m (49-10 1/2). At the CSUN All-Comers on Saturday, Minnesota's best performance came from redshirt sophomore Kostas Zaltos in the hammer throw at 69.58m, just under two meters away from his personal best mark of 71.21m back in 2021.
A Look Back at the 2021 Outdoor Campaign
Last season the University of Minnesota sent a total of 11 events to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. Of those, nine return to Minneapolis for the 2022 campaign. Those returning include NCAA 3000m steeplechase runner-up Alec Basten, NCAA bronze medalists Bethany Hasz (5000m) and Kostas Zaltos (Hammer Throw). Returning Second Team All-Americans include Abby Kohut-Jackson, the entire women's 4x400m relay team and Shelby Frank. Those returning as All-America Honorable Mention recipients are Kyle Atkinson and Tess Keyzers. At the 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Championships both Minnesota's men's and and women's teams finished third in Champaign, Ill.
Minnesota To Host 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships
For the first time since opening their new state-of-the-art outdoor track and field facility, the University of Minnesota will be the hosts of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in May. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, the nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface will be the focal point of the Midwest's top track and field student-athletes from May 13-15. Next week the Golden Gophers are headed to the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., as well as the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Those meets will be contested from March 24-26.
