MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (9-9, 2-4 B1G) fell short against Ohio State (13-3, 5-2 B1G) on Saturday night at Williams Arena 83-75 in the team's inaugural Pride Night. Sara Scalia (23) and Deja Winters (20) both dropped 20 points, the second time a Minnesota duo has done that in a game this season.
Minnesota outscored the Buckeyes in the second and fourth quarters by a combined 15 points, but Ohio State countered by outscoring the Golden Gophers 23 in the first and fourth quarters.
For Scalia, her 23-point performance is her fifth 20-point game of the year and is her third in six games dating back to her 37-point night against Ohio (Dec. 15). For Winters, her 20-point performance is her second in three games. Jasmine Powell returned to Williams Arena in a big way, scoring 17 points and adding nine assists, five rebounds and three steals in her first action at the Barn in 31 days.
Minnesota got off a solid start in the opening quarter with the two teams exchanging baskets with the score at 15-14. Neither team was able to get a rest until the first media timeout of the night which came at 1:20 remaining in the opening period. Ohio State ended the frame on an 8-0 run and Minnesota trailed 23-14 while shooting 33.3 percent from the floor.
The second quarter Minnesota made its move back into the game. Kadi Sissoko got momentum on the Gophers' side after she snagged an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and put in the second chance basket. Minnesota proceeded to go on a 10-2 run and Scalia came alive after not scoring in the opening quarter to finish with 11 in the first half. At the break the score still favored the Buckeyes, but the score closed at 38-37.
In the third it was a decisive 36 seconds that swung the Buckeyes way that made it tough on the Gophers. The final 36 second the visitors scored six points to push their lead from nine to 15 to enter the fourth up 64-49.
Minnesota did not fold in the fourth, outscoring the Buckeyes and clawing back by scoring 26 points in the final 10 minutes. The Gophers' 8-0 run in the fourth was a little too late as the team ran out of time after coming within seven. Both Scalia and Winters scored 10 points in the fourth.
Minnesota turns around for another marquee matchup with Iowa (9-4, 3-1 B1G) on Thursday, Jan. 20, on the BIg Ten Network. The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. at Williams Arena. Fans can listen to Tanner Hoops and Lynnette Sjoquist on KFAN+.
