Minnesota Starts FGCU Hidden Dual Tournament 2-0
1/15/2022 5:15:00 PM | Tennis
Minnesota opened their spring season on Saturday, taking on Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers. This marked the Gophers' first competitive match play since the Harvard Invitational in early November. Looking to build on successful fall tournament results, Minnesota started strong against Liberty, going 3-0 in doubles, 5-1 in singles; for a final 6-1 victory. They resumed play in the afternoon, squaring off against the hosts. Both teams coming off of morning victories, Minnesota continued their winning ways, this match being 4-3, going 1-2 in doubles, alongside 4 victories in singles play. The 2-0 start to the season gives Minnesota a strong foundation to build upon early in the year.
Facing Liberty, Minnesota cruised to a clean sweep of doubles play. Rachel Hanford and Emilee Duong took down their opposition 6-1. Dalila Said and Maria Rizzolo followed suit with a 6-4 victory of their own. Ekin Ercetin and Anfisa Danilchenko rounded out a victorious start, outlasting Liberty's pairing 7-6 (9). In singles play, Hanford, Karvouni, Said, and Rizzolo each won in straight sets. The convincing wins secured the overall victory for the Gophers in their first match of the season. Lucy Lu fought back after losing the first set, taking the next two in a marathon of a three set win. Morning play rounded out with Emilee Duong fighting back to force a third set, before eventually falling in a close defeat. Minnesota picked up their first win of the season in their initial match.
In the afternoon, the Gophers were unable to take the doubles point, as FGCU took two of the three matches played. The pairing of Dalila Said and Maria Rizzolo built on their morning result, finishing the day 2-0 as a doubles team. Minnesota fought back in singles play, en route to a 4-2 record and the match win. Hanford, Karvouni, and Rizzolo all won in straight sets for the second time on Saturday. Ekin Ercetin and Zeyneb Sarioglan both fell in hard fought sets; Ercetin moving to 1-1 on the day. Closing out the win, Anfisa Danilchenko fought back from a first set loss, to a three set win, capping off a winning day for Gopher Tennis.
Next Up:
The Gophers will have Sunday off as a result of heavy rain which is expected throughout the day. Their final match in Fort Myers will be Monday morning, as they take on Florida Atlantic University at 7:00 AM (CST).
