Gophers Finish Unbeaten in Florida

Minnesota defeats Florida Atlantic 5-2, finishes tournament 3-0
The University of Minnesota tennis team finished play at the Florida Gulf Coast Hidden Dual in Fort Myers, Fla. on Monday morning, beating Florida Atlantic University (FAU), 5-2. Both teams entered the match 2-0. Minnesota posted wins against Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, while FAU beat Middle Tennessee and Georgia State.
The Gophers won all three doubles matches and took four of the six singles competitions to finish the weekend 3-0.
On Monday morning against FAU, all three Gopher pairings won convincingly in doubles. Rachel Hanford and Emilee Duong won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 pairing of Dalila Said and Maria Rizzolo and No. 3 duo of Anfisa Danilchenko and Vasia Karvouni each won 6-2.
In singles play, Minnesota posted wins at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Duong beat Katerina Filip 6-0, 6-3 at the second position, while Danilchenko rallied to beat Greta Schieroni 6-1, 4-6, 11-9
Said posted a 6-4, 6-4 win against Lexi Silna at the fifth position and Rizzolo recorded a tidy 6-3, 6-4 win against Millie-Mae Matthew at the sixth spot. The straight set win was the second of the weekend for Said and the third for Rizzolo.
On the weekend, the Gophers turned in strong performances from numerous players. Rizzolo went 3-0 in singles play, while Dalila Said, Karvouni, and Danilchenko each finished the tournament 2-0 in singles action.
Next Up:
Minnesota opens its home schedule at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22 when it hosts Drake at Baseline Tennis Center. Minnesota then welcomes Marquette to Baseline for a 10 a.m. match on Sunday, Jan. 23.
