Gophers Take on Drake and Marquette in Home Opening Weekend

Minnesota hosts the Bulldogs at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Golden Eagles 10:00 a.m Sunday
The University of Minnesota tennis team will compete for the first time this season at Baseline Tennis Center when it hosts the Drake University Bulldogs and Marquette Golden Eagles this weekend. The Gophers play Drake at 10 a.m. on Saturday Jan. 22, and host Marquette at 10 a.m. Sunday Jan. 23.
The Gophers are coming off of a 3-0 opening weekend, as they posted wins against Liberty, Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic at the Florida Gulf Coast Hidden Dual in Fort Myers, Fla. Drake is 1-1 this year, as it beat Marquette, 7-0, and lost 6-1 to Iowa. Marquette comes to Minneapolis with an 0-2 record and losses to Drake and Iowa.
Previous Match
Minnesota most recently capped off its undefeated weekend with a win against Florida Atlantic. The Gophers earned victories at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, while also winning all three doubles competitions. They will look to continue momentum on Saturday.
The Competition
Drake University last played in Minneapolis in September, with players participating in the Gopher Invitational. Minnesota recorded a 5-1 singles record in their individual matchups, as well as a 4-0 record in doubles. Since 2005, Minnesota is 6-0 against Drake and 5-0 at Baseline Tennis Center. The most recent matchup came in 2020 when Minnesota won 7-0.
Marquette is 0-9 against Minnesota since 2001 and 0-5 in Minneapolis. The last matchup came in February 2020, a 4-0 Gopher win at Baseline Tennis Center.
