Gophers win doubles point, go 5-1 in singles matches

The University of Minnesota tennis team wrapped up their first home dual match of the season, defeating Drake University, 6-1. Minnesota entered the match 3-0, while Drake came in 1-1, with their win coming against the Gophers' Sunday opponent Marquette. Minnesota improves to 4-0, Drake falls to 1-2.

The Gophers won both doubles matches which finished and took five of the six singles competitions to start the weekend on a winning note.

On Saturday, Gophers' pairings fought back and finished decisively in doubles. Rachel Hanford and Emilee Duong won 6-3 at the No. 1 slot, securing the last five games after falling behind 1-3. The No. 2 pairing of Dalila Said and Maria Rizzolo took a back and forth match, 6-4. The No. 3 duo of Anfisa Danilchenko and Vasia Karvouni did not finish on account of the previous match results.

In singles play, Minnesota posted wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. In the first position, Hanford defeated Petushkova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Ekin Ercetin used a convincing push to win her match, 6-3, 6-1, at the third position. Duong rallied back from a dropped second set to win her match against Ines Stephani. The hard fought match ended 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, securing a clean sweep for the Gophers amongst spots one through three.

Freshman Maria Rizzolo and Anfisa Danilchenko continued their excellent collegiate starts, each winning in straight sets and shoring up the victory for Minnesota. Rizzolo is now 4-0 in the spring season's singles matches. The Gophers continue to show their depth and quality early in the season, as they move to 4-0 on the year.
