Minnesota wins 7-0, off to best start in 25 years

The Gophers tennis team finished their home opening weekend on Sunday, adding a win against Marquette to close the weekend 2-0. Marquette came into the match 1-2, falling to 1-3 after today's result. Minnesota remains undefeated on the season, and continues their success against Marquette, 13-1 in all meetings. The Gophers 5-0 record marks their best start since 1997.

The Gophers won both doubles matches and took all of the six singles competitions to win 7-0.

The pairing of Dalila Said and Maria Rizzolo picked up another win on Sunday, now 5-0 playing together in dual matches. At the No. 3 position, Anfisa Danilchenko and Ekin Ercetin cruised to a 6-2 victory, and confirmed the doubles point against Marquette. Rachel Hanford and Emilee Duong did not finish their match on account of previous results.

In singles play, Minnesota posted wins at every position. At No. 1, Duong beat Natalija Popovic 7-5, 6-1. After falling down two games to five, Duong rattled off five straight games to finish the first set, before closing out the win. This win is Duong's first of the year at the No. 1 position; she improved to 3-1 in the spring season.

All Gophers won in straight sets, with dominant wins from Vasia Karvouni, Maria Rizzolo, and Dalila Said. Anfisa Danilchenko and Maria Rizzolo remain undefeated on the year, the two freshmen are now a combined 9-0 in dual match play. Ekin Ercetin battled in a tight first set, winning 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Dalila Said picked up her third singles win of the season, as she remained unbeaten in both spring season singles and doubles.

On the weekend, the Gophers turned in strong performances from numerous players. The depth continues to be a strength of Minnesota, as they tallied two more wins and improved to 5-0.

Next Up:
The Gophers return to Baseline next Saturday, Jan. 29, for a doubleheader against South Dakota and St. Thomas. Minnesota recorded a 7-0 win in their last meeting with South Dakota, and will look for a similar result next weekend. Saturday will mark St. Thomas' first match of the spring season.
