MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota dropped a 21-15 dual to the ninth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers as they wrestled their second top-10 opponent in three days on Sunday afternoon.Â
The Badgers won six of the ten bouts en route to the dual victory, taking advantage of a hot start by winning five of the first six matches. It was Minnesota's first loss against their cross-border rival since Jan. 9, 2011, and their first loss to Wisconsin at home since 2008.Â
Jake Bergeland put the Gophers on the board first after the Maroon & Gold dropped the first two bouts, as Bergeland sealed a 6-4 decision with two pivotal takedowns in the match.Â
Trailing 18-3 after 165 pounds, Bailee O'Reilly and Isaiah Salazar looked to get Minnesota back in the dual as they both earned major decision wins over ranked opponents to keep the dual in reach, but Wisconsin would close the door at 197 pounds as Michial Foy dropped a 6-4 decision to Braxton Amos.Â
Gable Steveson finished the dual with perhaps his most dominant performance on the season, defeating #8 Trent Hillger by major decision after taking him down 11 times in the match while also collecting nearly three minutes of riding time.Â
With the defeat, Minnesota will drop to an even 3-3 on the year, while Wisconsin keeps their undefeated start to the season going as they jump to 7-0.Â
The Gophers will have an off-week next weekend, but will return to action on Friday, Jan. 28 against the third-ranked Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.Â
