STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is home for a second-straight game when the Golden Gophers host No. 16 Ohio State Thursday night. Minnesota and Ohio State split action last year. The Gophers defeated OSU at Williams Arena, but fell to the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Tournament to end the season.Â
• Thursday's game marks Minnesota's Coaches vs. Cancer game, nationwide event that unites basketball coaches across the country for a common cause – saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff across the nation wear sneakers with their game day apparel during games to raise awareness, helping to save lives by raising funds and encouraging people to educate themselves about cancer prevention, screening, and early detection. Gopher athletes will wear specialized warmup shirts of individuals they are honoring, who have been affected by cancer.Â
• Minnesota is hoping to get back to having a full roster after taking a two-week roster hit due to injury, illness and COVID-19 protocols. In the Iowa (1/16) and Rutgers games (1/22), Minnesota competed with just seven scholarship athletes and postponed its game at Penn State as it fell below the required amount. Despite missing three starters against Rutgers, Minnesota defeated the Scarlet Knights, 68-65. Payton Willis and Luke Loewe stepped up in a big way, scoring 51 of the team's 68 points.Â
• Payton Willis was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week after his outstanding performance against Rutgers. His 32 points marked a new career high for the senior. Willis hit eight three-pointers in the game, which was a new career best and tied a program record. He finished the game 11-of-17, 8-of-13 from three (4-4 in the second half), had three rebounds, seven assists and a steal.Â
• Minnesota had one of its best shooting displays in the Rutgers win as the Gophers made 26-of-48 (.542) field goals, including a season-best 13-of-24 (.542) from three. It marked the sixth time the Gophers have shot 50 percent or better this season and second time from long-range. The Gophers had 13 threes and shot 54.2 percent, both season-highs. Last season, Minnesota failed to shoot 50 percent in any of its 29 games. Saturday's 54.2 percent overall and from three-point range were both season-bests in Big Ten play. The Gophers have shot better than 50 percent three times in conference games this season, including the past two.
MANDATES SET TO BEGIN JAN. 26Â
• The University of Minnesota announced Jan. 14 that it will require attendees at indoor events with 200 or more spectators to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative, third-party COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event.Â
• The temporary policy, which reflects the University's vaccination announcement made earlier in the day, will start on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, and will end on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022. This policy may be extended, and Athletics will work with campus leadership to determine if an extension is needed.
• Any extension of this policy will be announced prior to Feb. 9. The COVID-19 vaccine requirement applies to all attendees age five and older. Minnesota's indoor mask / face covering mandate also remains in effect for all home athletic indoor events.
