Gophers Fall to Buckeyes in Overtime

1/28/2022 8:02:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota picks up a point, but suffers defeat on the road for the first time since Oct. 9.

Columbus, Ohio. -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team battled to a 2-1 overtime loss on Friday night at OSU Ice Rink.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, it was Minnesota (19-7-1) that opened the scoring for the 22nd time this season. Halfway through the second period, senior Taylor Heise cut in on a two-on-one rush and netted her 18th goal of the season. The Gophers would hold the lead until the 8:52 mark of the third period, when Ohio State's (19-4-0) Madison Bizal scored early into a four-on-three power-play to even things up. In overtime, Ohio State's Liz Schepers netted the winning goal on a backdoor tap-in.

Lauren Bench was excellent in her second straight start as she stopped 30 of 32 shots in the defeat. Ohio State's Thiele stopped 36 of 37 shots for the victory.

Quotable
"A heck of a hockey game here tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "Both teams laid it on the line. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win, but our team played really well. Lauren Bench was exceptional in net and played really well to give us a chance. We're disappointed with the result, but we know when two good hockey teams play, someone has to take the loss. We're looking forward to regrouping and getting back after it tomorrow."

Notable
Taylor Heise extended her lead in the national scoring race with a goal in the contest. The Lake City, Minn. native currently has 44 points on the season. The Gophers losing streak against the Buckeyes extends to six games. Minnesota falls to 0-3 on the season in overtime games.
