Minnesota notches four second period goals to win 5-3 and take four points in the series against Ohio State.
Columbus, Ohio. -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team surged past the Buckeyes on Saturday following four second period goals.
It was Ohio State (19-5-0) that kicked off the scoring much earlier than Friday's contest as Minnesota native Paetyn Levis scored just over two minutes in. Minnesota (20-7-1) responded in a significant way as they scored four second period goals to surge ahead. Maggie Nicholson kicked off the dominant middle frame with her first career goal. Taylor Heise scored two and Madeline Wethington added another to head into the second intermission up three goals. After Ohio State scored two to cut the Gophers' lead to one, Audrey Wethington scored an empty net goal to secure the victory.
Makayla Pahl made 32 saves for her eighth victory of the season. The junior netminder has yet to lose a game she has started this season.
Quotable
"A really big win here tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "As a staff we're really proud of our team. Obviously our first period was not what we wanted, but our upperclassmen led us in the second and really turned the tide for us. Maggie Nicholson with her first goal as a Gopher was really special. That really got us going in the second to get us up 4-1. Credit to Ohio State for battling back, but our team did enough to get the win in regulation and a huge four-point weekend for us. I'm really happy about it and proud of our group and looking forward to getting home."
Notable
Taylor Heise became the first Gopher this season to hit the 20 goal mark and surpassed her previous season high of 18. Maggie Nicholson became the fifth Gopher this season to record a first-career goal. The Gophers become the first WCHA team to reach 20 victories on the season.
Up Next
The Gophers return home to take on Bemidji State next weekend at Ridder Arena.
