The top-ranked Gophers lit the lamp seven times in their WCHA-leading 21st victory of the season.
Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 1 Golden Gopher women's hockey team dominated on both ends of the ice to defeat Bemidji State 7-0 on Friday night at Ridder Arena. Minnesota claims sole possession of first place in the WCHA with the victory and Wisconsin defeat to Minnesota Duluth.
Minnesota (21-7-1) scored early and often to down Bemidji State (10-14-3) for the 13th consecutive game. Freshman forward Peyton Hemp got the Gophers on the board early as she tallied her 10th goal of the season just over 90 seconds into the contest. Minnesota tacked on six more throughout the game from five different goal scorers to secure the series-opening victory. Abigail Boreen, Audrey Wethington, Catie Skaja, Amy Potomak, and Savannah Norcross all recorded goals. Each member of Minnesota's third line tallied a goal in the team's sixth game with at least seven goals this season.
Goaltender Lauren Bench had a special night as she earned a shutout in her 100th career start. The graduate goaltender stopped all 26 shots to earn her second shutout of the season.
Quotable
"A solid win and I thought we got better as the game went on," said head coach Brad Frost. "A little bit of a slow start, but we were able to get those couple of goals to get us going. The second period was good and the third was even better. Lauren [Bench] played great in net in her 100th start – to get a shutout too was pretty special. A great job getting the three points and we're looking forward to tomorrow."
Notable
Peyton Hemp recorded her first career multi-goal game with a pair of goals. Audrey Wethington's goal assisted by Madeline became the fourth instance in which the Wethington sisters have assisted on each other's goal. Taylor Heise recorded her team-best 16th multi-point game with a pair of assists.
