The senior forward tallied two goals and an assist to help Minnesota earn a critical weekend sweep at Ridder Arena.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 1 Golden Gopher women's hockey team earned its eighth sweep of the season with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Minnesota has now beaten Bemidji State 14 consecutive times and extends its record to 8-2-0 in 2022.
Unlike Friday's contest Minnesota (22-7-1) had to battle from start to finish to complete the weekend sweep over Bemidji State (10-15-3). Fifth-year defender Emily Brown got the Gophers on the board first for the 24th time this season. The lead didn't last long as Bemidji State's Taylor Nelson evened the score 38 seconds after the opening goal. In the second, it was senior forward Taylor Heise who put Minnesota back on top with her 21st goal of the season. The Beavers once again had an answer as Graysen Myers evened the score again 15 seconds later. Minnesota closed out the second period with authority with goals from Abigail Boreen and Savannah Norcross to provide the two-goal cushion. Heise added an empty-net goal to secure the victory and push her goal total to 22 and point total to 51 on the season.
Goaltender Lauren Bench stood tall for the Gophers again in net, stopping 25 of 27 shots in her ninth win of the season. Bemidji State's Hogenson received the start for the visitors and made 42 saves in the losing effort.
Quotable
"A good sweep at home," said head coach Brad Frost. "Every point is important and I thought we played really well here tonight. Credit Bemidji, they played a lot better than they did last night and we knew that was going to happen. They answered our two goals the very next shift, which created some great momentum for them and not so much for us. Getting those two goals towards the end of the second were really big going into the third. Overall, really pleased with how our team and Lauren [Bench] played. We're excited about enjoying it and working hard this week."
Notable
With three points on Saturday, Taylor Heise has reached the 50 point mark in a single season for the first time in her career. The senior currently sits at 145 career points in 125 games played. Abigail Boreen surpassed the 70 career point mark with two points in the win.
