Gophers Battle Back to Beat Huskies in St. Cloud

2/11/2022 6:55:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Senior forward Abigail Boreen notched her second hat-trick of the season to propel Minnesota to a 5-3 victory on Friday afternoon.

ST. CLOUD, MINN. -- The No. 1 Golden Gopher women's hockey team picked up its 20th straight victory over the Huskies after a dominant performance by the top forward line. Minnesota's top-line combination of Abigail Boreen, Taylor Heise, and Catie Skaja tallied 12 total points and all five goals.

Minnesota (23-7-1) started off slowly in the scoring department, but climbed back to complete its first two-goal comeback victory of the season. St. Cloud State (9-18-2) was outshot 23-6 in the first period, but went into the intermission up 2-0. Boreen kicked off her dominant day and the Gophers scoring with her 18th goal of the season just over midway through the second period to cut the Huskies' lead to one. With 10 seconds left in the middle frame, Skaja hammered home a feed from Heise to tie the contest heading into the third. The 'U' pulled away in the third period with two more goals from Boreen and an empty-netter from Heise. Minnesota outshot St. Cloud State 60-17 in the win.

Goaltender Lauren Bench started between the pipes for the third consecutive game and stopped 14 shots to earn her 10th victory of the season. St. Cloud State's Emma Polusny stopped 56 shots in the defeat.

Quotable
"I'm really proud of our team today," said head coach Brad Frost. "We got down 2-0 in the first period, but really dominated play. They really trusted the process, stayed with it, and dug deep. A huge goal with 10 seconds left in the second period gave us an opportunity to pull away in the third. All in all, a really big three points and a win. Our team faced some adversity here today and found a way to get through it."

Notable
With four points on Friday, Taylor Heise extended her career point total to 149. Abigail Boreen reached the 20 goal mark in a single season for the first time in her career and moved into a tie for fourth in the nation in goals. It was the first five-point game of her career. Fifth-year defender Olivia Knowles played in her 160th game as a Gopher, moving her into sole possession of sixth-place in program history. Fifth-year defender Emily Brown played in career game no. 159, tying her with Anne Schleper for seventh in program history.
