Minnesota Splits Matches on Opening Day of Big Ten Match Play

1/31/2022 9:13:00 PM | Women's Golf

The University of Minnesota women's golf team began its spring 2022 campaign in the Sunshine State at the Big Ten Match Play at the Innisbrook Resort on Monday.

The Gophers split the competition for the day, falling to Ohio State in the first match but claiming victory over Penn State in the second match before action was cut short due to darkness.

"This is an ideal way to start our competitive spring season," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said.  "This morning we went out and battled a very experienced Ohio State team and pushed them to their limits. I was really proud of the way the team executed and stayed the course. In the afternoon we went head-to-head against Penn State and we were able to pull off a really gritty win. The experience we get today and tomorrow against Nebraska will be super beneficial as we head into our next stroke play competition."

The second round matches were called off early due to darkness, with results becoming final once play was halted for the day. As the Gophers were ahead in two of six matches and tied in three others, they held a 2-1-3 lead over Penn State to claim the win.

Carpenter once again claimed a victory for the Maroon and Gold as she was up four through 13 holes against Penn State's Drew Nienhaus. Senior Joanne Free was also victorious, holding a seven stroke lead over Jami Morris of Penn State through 12 holes before play was called due to darkness.

The trio of Grace Curran, Geraldine Wong and Leah Herzog battled their competitors throughout the second round, ending in a tie through 13.
