10/14/2022 6:09:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minnesota’s 11-goal victory is the largest over Minnesota State in program history.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 Gopher Women's hockey team passed its first road test with flying colors with a 11-0 win over Minnesota State on Friday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.Â
Â
Minnesota (3-0-0) stepped off the bus ready to go and dominated the first period over a Minnesota State team (0-5-0) that is receiving votes in both national polls. The #Gophers scored three goals, including two from Grace Zumwinkle, and outshot the Mavericks 24-4 through the first 20 minutes. Minnesota tallied three more in the second as Savannah Norcross and Nelli Laitinen scored their first goals of the season and Grace Zumwinkle completed her hat-trick. Abbey Murphy, Taylor Heise, Peyton Hemp, Madison Kaiser and Ella Huber all added goals in the third.Â
Sophomore Skylar Vetter got her second-straight start for the Gophers, stopping all 17 shots for her second-career shutout. MSU's Barbro stopped 32 of 38 shots before being relieved for Alex Berg.Â
QuotableÂ
"Just a really thorough effort today," said head coach Brad Frost. "A great first period put a lot of pressure on Mankato, and we were able to get a few goals there. We just continued to extend the lead from there. I'm just really impressed with our team and how they made plays and played the right way. Some big moments with Madison Kaiser and Nelli Laitinen getting their first goals as Gophers and Grace Zumwinkle getting the hat-trick. All-in-all a great night and looking forward to getting back to it tomorrow."Â

•   With a hat-trick tonight, Grace Zumwinkle moves into sole possession of ninth place in program history in career-goals (88).
•   Freshman defender Nelli Laitinen scored her first career goal seven seconds after Zumwinkle completed the hat-trick.
•   Madison Kaiser scored her first career goal in the third period.
•   Nine different Gophers lit the lamp for the first time since Dec. 1, 2013 against Princeton.
