Jenna Wenaas posted 11 kills and nine digs for Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 10 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated Illinois in three sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 on Saturday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion.

The Gophers have now won seven in-a-row and 11 of the past 12 against the Illini.

Taylor Landfair paced Minnesota with 12 kills while Jenna Wenaas had 11 kills and nine digs. Rachel Kilkelly posted a season-high 10 digs to lead Minnesota defensively.

As a team, Minnesota (10-6, 5-3 Big Ten) hit .306 with 38 kills, one team block, 43 digs and five aces. Illinois (9-9, 4-4 Big Ten) hit .239 with 42 kills, six team blocks, 31 digs and nine aces.

Raina Terry led Illinois with 15 kills.



Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota took a 4-2 lead on two early kills from Jenna Wenaas before Illinois came back to take a 5-4 lead on a pair of aces. The two teams went back and forth with no one taking more than a two-point lead until the Gophers went up 11-8 after a 3-0 run. An ace by CC McGraw sparked the spurt. Minnesota would extend its lead to 15-10 at the media timeout after kills from Taylor Landfair, Carter Booth and Wenaas. The 'U took firm control after the media break, scoring four of the next five to go up 19-11 and force an Illini timeout. Illinois cut the lead to five at 20-15 after a 4-1 run but Landfair answered back with a kill and an ace to force the final Illinois timeout. The Gophers would take set one, 25-19, hitting .444 compared to .200 for Illinois. Landfair led the team with five kills while Booth and Wenaas had three.

Set 2: Minnesota took a 5-3 lead early after kills from Landfair and Wenaas, but a 4-0 run paced by a pair of aces gave Illinois a 7-5 lead. A 5-2 run by the Gophers put the home team back up 10-9, but the Illini responded by scoring five of the next six to go up 14-11. Illinois took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. The Gophers would cut the lead to 16-15 after a pair of kills from Landfair, forcing an Illinois timeout. The Illini would go up 18-15 before a 4-0 Gophers run led by a kill from Mckenna Wucherer put the 'U' up 19-18. Illinois scored two straight to go up 20-19 before another kill from Wucherer and an ace from Melani Shaffmaster helped the home team take a 22-20 lead, forcing an Illini timeout. The two teams would exchange points the rest of the set, with Minnesota eventually taking home a 25-23 set two victory.

Set 3: Illinois went up 3-0 before the Gophers answered with six straight points to go up 6-3. Carter Booth had two kills and Wenaas had one in the run. The Illini fought back to go on a 9-3 run to take a 12-9 lead halfway through the set. A 3-0 run paced by kills from Naya Gros and Shaffmaster tied the set at 12. Another kill from Wenaas put the 'U' up 15-14 heading into the media timeout. The Illini would tie it up at 15 before kills from Landfair and Wenaas led a 3-0 spurt to give the Gophers an 18-15 advantage, leading to an Illinois timeout. The Gophers would go up by as many as five at 21-16. Illinois would.cut it to 24-22, leading to a timeout from coach McCutcheon. They cut the deficit to one at 24-23 before Wenaas finished off the set with a kill for Minnesota to win, 25-23.

Notable:
-Minnesota moved to 43-40 all-time vs. Illinois, including a 14-2 record under Hugh. Minnesota has won seven in-a-row and 11 of the last 12 against the Illini. 
-Taylor Landfair (12) totaled double digit kills for the 16th time this season and 34th time in her career. She's one of two players in the country to have double digit kills in every match.
-Jenna Wenaas posted 11 kills for her seventh double digit kill match of the season and 31st time in her career.
-Rachel Kilkelly totaled a season-high 10 digs to lead Minnesota. It was her 25th career 10+ dig match.
-CC McGraw (2) tallied multiple aces for the sixth time this year and 31st time in her career.
