‘U’ Uses Dominant Third Period to Secure Sweep

10/8/2022 5:03:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota netted three goals and outshot Bemidji State 13-1 in the final frame to earn a 4-1 victory.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 Gopher Women's Hockey team closed out a conference-play sweep with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Minnesota sweeps on opening weekend for the first time since 2019.

Minnesota (2-0-0) got on the board early again thanks to Lizi Norton's first goal as a Gopher less than two minutes in. Bemidji State (2-3-1) weathered the storm in the first and tied the game early in the second from a goal by captain Kate Boland. Minnesota responded with a dominant third period with goals from Grace Zumwinkle, Catie Skaja and Emily Oden and allowed only one shot to secure the Saturday victory. The Gophers outshot the Beavers 37-16 in the contest.

Sophomore Skylar Vetter started in goal for Minnesota, making 15 saves to earn her first victory of the season and seventh of her career. Hannah Hogenson got the start again for the Beavers, making 33 saves in the defeat.

Quotable
"A great weekend for us to get a sweep against a very good Bemidji State team," said head coach Brad Frost. "I'm really proud of our players. Tonight was a different game than last night with tighter checking. We knew it would be that way, but I'm proud of our team and the way they responded – especially in the third period. Overall, a great weekend and we're looking to rest up and get back after it next week."

"Grace Zumwinkle, [fifth-year] captain, got things going to take the lead and picked up her 150th point. What a special thing that is for her. She's had an amazing impact on our program and will continue to do so for the rest of the year. Lizi Norton scored her first goal as a Gopher which is a great moment for her."

Notable
•    Grace Zumwinkle recorded her 150th career point with her first goal of the season in the third period.
•    Minnesota extends its win streak to 16 games against the Beavers
•    Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise leads the Gophers in points through two games with four.
