Cesarone's Goal Propels Minnesota Past Iowa

10/9/2022 3:57:00 PM | Soccer

Minnesota pushed past Iowa in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1,909 fans

MINNEAPOLIS – Driven by a record-breaking crowd of 1,909 attendees, the University of Minnesota soccer team clinched the 1-0 victory over Iowa on Senior Day at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The Golden Gophers (6-7-1, 2-4-0 Big Ten) outshot Iowa (3-5-5, 0-2-3 Big Ten) 18-12, despite the Hawkeyes leading in shots on goal, 6-5.

Graduate defender Gabbie Cesarone scored the game winner off a corner from fellow graduate, McKenna Buisman. Cesarone's goal is her fourth this season, all of which have been off set piece plays.

Picking up her fifth shutout on the year, senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko matched her season high six saves. Plaschko stopped all six of Iowa's chances, four of which came in the second half.

"I'm so proud of the team for grinding out a really tough game on Senior Day," said head coach Erin Chastain. "That's how Big Ten games are, and we haven't been able to do that. I'm proud of our grit at the end of the game – to hang on to the 1-0. We had a lot of people contribute to the performance and it feels great that our players are ready to go in and contribute at a high level."

Cesarone's third game winning goal this season came in the 23rd minute. After the Golden Gophers drew a corner, Buisman was up for the set piece cross. In perfect position, the defender used her right foot to finish and secure the win.

The highlight of Sunday was Senior Day, as the 2023 class was honored prior to the match. Following the conclusion of the win, Izzy Brown, Sadie Harper, Eva Bruer, Megan Plaschko, and Gabbie Cesarone have a combined 22 wins, 20 goals, and 18 shutouts.

Minnesota hits the road this week as it travels to Rutgers and Maryland. Game times are set for 6 p.m. CT against the top ten ranked Scarlet Knights on Thursday and 12 p.m. CT against the Terrapins on Sunday. Both matches can be streamed live on B1G+.
