Gophers Earn Road Point Against No. 8 Rutgers

10/13/2022 7:12:00 PM | Soccer

PISCATAWAY – After finishing two equalizers in a crucial road test, the University of Minnesota soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against the eighth ranked Scarlet Knights to earn a point at Yurcak Field on Thursday night.

Minnesota (6-7-2, 2-4-1 Big Ten) scored game-tying goals in both halves against Rutgers (12-1-2, 4-1-2). Thursday's tie is the first time Minnesota has picked up a result against a top opponent since Northwestern on Oct. 16, 2018, when the Wildcats held No. 12 ranking.

Rutgers outshot Minnesota by a slim 12-10 margin, as McKenna Buisman led the offense with three shots. Sophia Boman and Gabbie Cesarone scored, while three other Gophers took chances.

Cesarone's goal marks her fifth this season, beating out her single season goal record she set at WASHU of four during her sophomore season. The defender now leads the Gophers in goals and field player minutes at 1,310.

Boman's finish is her fourth on the year, as she is sitting at the top in Minnesota points at 11. One slot below Cesarone in field player minutes, she's competed in 1,279 this season.

"I'm really proud of our group, we battled back from down a goal twice," said head coach Erin Chastain. "They scored an early goal in the first half and we got a great tying goal. Sadie (Harper) did a great job laying it off to (Sophia) Boman, who was assertive with a great finish. They got another early goal in the second half and Gabbie (Cesarone) was able to get on the end of a great serve from Alana (Dressely). I'm so proud of the way we battled and going toe-to-toe with a top ten team. Again, we were in a tight match until the end and did a great job to close out a point on the road."

After an early Scarlet Knight's goal in the third minute, the Maroon & Gold would be quick to equalize the score. Abi Frandsen drove down the right sideline, surpassing three Scarlet Knights to deliver a ball to Sadie Harper. Using her heel, Harper flicked a layoff to Boman who finished to the left side of the net.

Minnesota had three more chances following Boman's goal, but went into the locker room tied, 1-1.

Rutgers took  a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the second half off a set piece play.

Ensuring the road point, Minnesota's backline came to the rescue. Defender Alana Dressely delivered a ball to the far-left post, where Cesarone was perfectly placed. Scoring her fourth header goal and fifth this season, Cesarone finished seven minutes after the Scarlet Knights.

Up next, Minnesota travels to Maryland to face the Terrapins on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The match can be streamed live on B1G+.
