COLLEGE PARK – Two goals in the first half drove the University of Minnesota soccer team past Maryland at Ludwig Field on Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota (7-7-2, 3-4-1 Big Ten) had an early goal, quickly followed by Maryland (2-8-5, 1-7-0 Big Ten) who tied things up. With 15 seconds left, the Golden Gophers scored to secure the 2-1 win.
With the win over the Terrapins, Minnesota heads back to Minneapolis with four points under its belt. The win also marks an undefeated Big Ten road weekend for the first time since the 2021 season when the Gophers beat Illinois and Northwestern in the same weekend.
"It was a typical, gritty Sunday Big Ten road win," said head coach Erin Chastain. "I think we made the game harder than it had to be, but we scored two great goals and had some other close chances. We have momentum going into being at home on Thursday, and I'm proud of the four road points from this group."
The scoring began quickly, as Minnesota's Sophia Romine banged a left-footed one touch goal off a cross from Megan Gray just 10 minutes into the game. Maryland's Alyssa Poarch answered back 18 minutes later, scoring off a break away opportunity.
Ensuring four points on the weekend, Gabbie Cesarone scored her sixth goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first half. Khyah Harper delivered the set piece to Cesarone, who used her head to finish. The graduate transfer's goal marks her fifth header goal this season, while all six have been off set pieces.
Before hitting the road next weekend to face Illinois, the Gophers return to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie stadium to close out their home slate against Purdue on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT. The match can be streamed live on B1G+.
