Gophers Down Boilermakers at Home, 2-0

MINNEAPOLIS – A first half brace from junior Sophia Romine lifted the University of Minnesota soccer team over Purdue, 2-0, on Thursday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
With the win over the Boilermakers (3-10-3, 0-6-3 Big Ten), the Golden Gophers (8-7-2, 4-4-1 Big Ten) continue a four-game unbeaten streak.
Romine secured her second brace of the season, scoring in the seventh and 22nd minutes. Both goals were off corners that were double assisted.
The Maroon & Gold were led in shots by Sophia Boman with five, followed by McKenna Buisman with four, and Romine with three. Boman and Buisman each had one assist, while Gabbie Cesarone had two.
Collecting three saves in the second half, Megan Plaschko picks up her sixth shutout this season and 19th career shutout. The senior needs one more to enter the top five for all-time career Minnesota shutouts.
"I'm really proud of the effort," said head coach Erin Chastain. "The first half was some of the best soccer that we played, we scored two great goals and knocked on the door for a third. Certainly happy with the shutout and walking away with three points. Now we look ahead to Sunday."
Minnesota was quick to get on the board, scoring in the seventh minute off a corner kick. Delivered by Boman, Cesarone had the first touch as Romine got behind and finished.
Romine's second goal came 15 minutes later and was almost identical to the first. A corner kick serviced by Buisman was delivered to Cesarone, who laid it off to Romine who finished.
Up next, the Gophers travel to Illinois to face the Fighting Illini in the Big Ten finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match can be streamed live on B1G+.
