QUICK KICKS: No. 8 RUTGERS
Minnesota opens the weekend against reigning Big Ten Champions and 2021 College Cup semifinalists in the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is the fourth ranked opponent the Gophers have faced and the third time they've faced a ranked team on the road this season. Since 2014, Minnesota has earned three results over the Scarlet Knights. With a win on Thursday, the Golden Gophers would earn its first victory over a top 15 opponent since defeating No. 12 Northwestern on Sept. 16, 2018.

QUICK KICKS: MARYLAND
The Golden Gophers will trek to Maryland in a crucial mid-season showdown with the Terrapins. Sunday's match is the first meeting between the Big Ten opponents since 2020, as Minnesota leads the series 5-1. Maryland has just one conference win this season, over Michigan on Sept. 16 in College Park.

BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Graduate defender Gabbie Cesarone and senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko were honored by the Big Ten Conference for their performances against Iowa on Sunday. Cesarone won Defender of the Week while Plaschko earned Goalkeeper of the Week.

Cesarone, a centerback from St. Charles, Ill., scored her fourth goal and third game winner against Iowa. All four of Cesarone's goals have been off corner kicks while all but three have been headers.

Plaschko, a Minnesota native, posted her fifth shutout this season and matched her season high of six saves.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS
Sunday's clean sheet victory also marked Plaschko's 18th career shutout. Plaschko needs just two more to enter Minnesota's top five in career shutouts.

The senior keeper is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with Penn State's Katherine Asman in shutouts. Both have five this season.

Plaschko sits at 34th nationally in minutes played at 1,260.

THE GRAD TRANSFER MAKES HER MARK

Cesarone has made herself a dangerous player on both defensive and offensive fronts for the Gophers.

As a key member of the backline, she's held opponents to a combined 51 shots on goal this season. She's also contributed to Minnesota's five shutouts, handing all five team zero-point games.

Minnesota's co-leader in goals scored with four, Cesarone has been dangerous on set piece plays. All four of her goals have been off corner kicks. She leads the Gophers in game winning goals, and is currently ranked 34th nationally in the same stat category.

LAST WEEKEND RECAP
The Golden Gophers picked up their second conference win over Big Ten foe, Iowa on Sunday. Cesarone, assisted by graduate McKenna Buisman, scored the game winner.

Midfielder Sophia Boman led in shots with four, while Abi Frandsen and Cesarone each had a pair. Nine other Gophers had one shot, while four saw the goal.

HOME SWEET HOME
Minnesota has held its own while playing on its home turf. Offensively, the Gophers have outshot their opponents on goal 49-29 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Ranked fifth in the NCAA for drawing corner kicks, averaging 7.57 per game, Minnesota has proven to be dangerous on set pieces. Seven of its 20 goals have been off corner kicks.

Five of their seven set piece goals have been at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

FACING RANKED FOES

Rutgers marks Minnesota's fourth ranked opponent this season. They've competed against No. 23 Wisconsin, No. 9 Northwestern and No. 7 TCU. They have yet to draw a result against ranked teams, but look to do so against the Scarlet Knights.

So far this season, the Gophers have led ranked opponents for 71 minutes and have outshot them 29-24. In all three matches, their ranked opponents have scored game winning goals in the last 10 minutes to defeat Minnesota.

UP NEXT
