Gophers Set to Play St. Francis Brooklyn on Veterans Day

STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Gophers are in the midst of a four-game home stand, playing the second time this week on Friday. Game is scheduled for a 6:01 game time. It marks the first time in program history the Gophers and Terriers battle in school history. 
• Playing on Veterans Day, the Golden Gophers will honor all branches of the military at the game. All Veterans will receive a discounted ticket at the ticket window on the day of the game. Current UMN Student Veterans receive free admission. Also during the month of November is the Gophers' canned food drive. Bring in three or more canned food items to receive a discounted ticket.  
Dawson Garcia led all players with 23 points and Ta'Lon Cooper narrowly missed a triple-double with 17 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds to lead Minnesota (1-0) to a season-opening 61-60 win versus Western Michigan (0-1) at Williams Arena Monday. Garcia made 8-of-16 field goals including 3-of-5 from three-point range and added seven rebounds in 31 minutes. Cooper dished out eight of his 10 assists in the first half and became the first Minnesota player with a point-assist double-double since Payton Willis versus Penn State on Feb. 12, 2022.
• University of Minnesota men's basketball head coach Ben Johnson has announced that Cameron Christie, Dennis Evans and Erick Reader will join the Golden Gopher program prior to the 2023-24 season. Christie and Evans have signed National Letters of Intent, while Reader is set to join the team as a preferred walk on. In addition, Johnson has announced that freshman Kadyn Betts will redshirt the 2022-23 season and be a part of the 2023-24 freshmen class. The Pueblo, Colo., product reclassified to the 2022 class and joined the program in August. 
• Coach Johnson named his captains for the 2022-23 season: Jamison Battle, Ta'Lon Cooper, Dawson Garcia and Taurus Samuels. The honor marks the first of their collegiate careers for Battle and Garcia and the second for Cooper and Samuels as they were named captains at Morehead State and Dartmouth.

CAMPUS TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR NOV. 11
• The University of Minnesota is hosting four separate athletic competitions on campus on Friday, Nov. 11, as women's swimming, men's basketball, volleyball and men's hockey all host home events that night. Women's swimming hosts Iowa at 5:00 p.m., while men's basketball will face St. Francis Brooklyn at 6:00 p.m., volleyball takes on Maryland at 6:30 p.m., and men's hockey drops the puck against Penn State at 7:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive on campus at least 45 minutes prior to the event to help ensure that they will not miss a moment of action at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, Williams Arena, Maturi Pavilion, or 3M Arena at Mariucci. Surrounding parking lots open at 3:00 p.m. for those fans who want to arrive extra early.
• Gopher Athletics will also be offering exclusive discounts on concessions and retail merchandise at events on Friday night to encourage fans to arrive early to Williams Arena, Maturi Pavilion, and 3M Arena at Mariucci. In each venue, fans will be able to purchase select candy for $2, popcorn for $3, and 16 oz. fountain Coca-Cola products for $3 at any Snack Shack concession stand while supplies last. Merchandise in the Golden Gophers Fan Shop will also be discounted 10% for men's basketball, volleyball, and men's hockey games.

ABOUT ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN
• St. Francis Brooklyn opened the season also on Monday night with a 94-56 win over Mount St. Mary College Merrimack. Four players scored in double digits in the win. 
• The Minnesota contest marks the second time in two years the Terriers have played a Big Ten opponent. SFC played Wisconsin last year in the season opener and fell, 81-58. 
• Rob Higgins was named a Preseason All-NEC after he averaged 11.5 points and 3.32 assists. Redshirt freshman Zion Bethea scored 24 points in the season opener and spent two seasons at Hofstra. Nuha Sagnia added a team-best 14 rebounds in Monday's win. 

ON THE DOCKET
• Minnesota competes in the Gavitt Games on Monday night when DePaul comes to town.  Game time is 6 p.m.
• The game will be televised on Big Ten Network, while Mike Grimm and Spencer Tollackson will provide the radio call on KTLK 1130 AM.
