STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team closes out a four-game home stand Thursday night as Central Michigan comes to town. Game time is set for 8 p.m., and televised on Big Ten Network. It will be a true Gopher doubleheader on BTN as the Gopher men's hockey program plays at 6 p.m.
• Minnesota is set to face Central Michigan Thursday for the first time since 2019. In the last meeting against the Chippewas, the Gophers won, 82-57 on Nov. 21,  2019. Marcus Carr had 19 points and Minnesota tied the second-best 3-point mark in school history with 14 made 3s. Payton Willis scored 18 points as the Gophers were 14 of 30 from beyond the arc. Daniel Oturu added nine points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for Minnesota.
• Minnesota is coming off a 69-53 loss Monday to the DePaul Blue Demons. With the loss, the Golden Gophers fall to 2-1 this season and now 2-2 in Gavitt Tipoff Games. Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (2-1) with 19 points and six rebounds, Pharrel Payne had 12 points and four boards. The loss also snapped Minnesota's 16-game streak of home wins over non-conference opponents. 
• In back-to-back games, Pharrel Payne has scored 12 points off the bench and has gone a perfect 5-5 and 6-6 in those games. In his three games as a Gopher, the rookie averages 21.8 minutes, 9 points, has gone 12-13 and 92.3 percent from the field.  
Ta'Lon Cooper has picked up where he left off last year in assists. The Roebuck, S.C., product ranks third in the Big Ten in assists and assists per games through the first three contests of the season. Cooper's 22 assists ranks 10th nationally, while his 7.3 per game is 11th. Dawson Garcia ranks second in the Big Ten in field goal attempts, seventh in FGs made and third in overall points. 

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
• Central Michigan is coming off a 76-60 home opening win over Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon. The Chippewas also opened their season on Nov. 10 at Marquette, a 97-73 loss. 
• For the second-straight game, a pair of coaches are in their second season at the helm of the program. CMU's Tony Barbee opened his second season at Central Michigan for the 2022-23 campaign. Barbee, who took over the CMU program in April 2021, previously spent seven seasons as an assistant at Kentucky. Prior to that, Barbee was also the head coach at Auburn and UTEP, each four-year stints.
• Four starters and five players return to the Central Michigan roster from the 2021 season. The Chippewas add 10 new players to the roster. Kevin Miller averages a team-best 18 points, while Brian Taylor averages 11 rebounds. Miller was named to the preseason All-Mid-American Conference. CMU went 7-23 last season. 
• Through two games this season, CMU is averaging 74.5 points as a team, 42 rebounds per game and shooting 47 percent from the field. 

ON THE DOCKET
• Minnesota hits the road for the first time of the 2022-23 season when it travels to the SoCal Challenge, Nov. 21 and 23 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Game time for the Nov. 21 game against California Baptist is slated for a 7:30 p.m. PT start, 9:30 p.m. CT.
• Mike Grimm and Spencer Tollackson will provide the radio call on KFAN 100.3 FM. The game will also be televised on CBS Sports Network.
