Gophers Fall in SoCal Challenge Championship

Jamison Battle led Minnesota with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Dawson Garcia and Braeden Carrington each had 15 points and eight rebounds, but UNLV defeated the Gophers 71-62 in the championship game of the SoCal Challenge. With the loss, Minnesota drops to 4-2 overall, while UNLV remains undefeated and improve to 6-0 this season.
Minnesota fell behind 10-3 early, as the Gophers opened the game just 1 of 8 from the field. However down 13-6, they connected on four straight field goals, keyed by a layup and three-pointer from Carrington during a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 16-15. A three-point play by Battle gave Minnesota its first lead of the game at 20-19 with 7:47 left in the half, but UNLV outscored the Gophers 19-4 from that point to take a 38-24 lead at the half. Battle led Minnesota with nine points and seven rebounds at the break.
Battle made a three-pointer and Garcia added a layup to open the second half and cut the lead to 38-29, but UNLV answered with a 16-5 run to push the lead to 54-34 midway through the half. The Gophers outscored UNLV 19-7 over the final 6:42, cutting the final margin to nine points.
Minnesota went 1-1 in the SoCal Challenge as it defeated California Baptist to advance to the championship game. The Gophers fell to UNLV for the third time in school history as the Running Rebels hold a 1-3 all-time series record.
The Golden Gophers will play it their first true road game of the season when they face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Monday night. The Gophers and Hokies play at 6 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
