The No. 3 Gophers will face No. 5 Yale tomorrow at 6:00 pm CT at the Dollar Loan Center.
HENDERSON, Nev. ā The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey advanced to the Henderson Collegiate Hockey Showcase title game after a 5-1 win over No. 12 Penn State on Friday evening at Lifeguard Arena.
Ā
After failing to score first in the past three games, Minnesota (10-2-2) scored four goals in the opening period to build a lead it would not relinquish. Madison Kaiser, Peyton Hemp, Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle each lit the lamp in the opening 20 minutes. Penn State (10-8-1) got on the board in the second period with its first goal in program history against the Gophers. Ella Huber scored her third goal of the season in third to close out the contest.
Sophomore Skylar Vetter made her 10th consecutive start and made nine saves before being relieved for senior Makayla Pahl midway through the second period. Vetter earned her 8th win of the season and recorded her first-career collegiate point with an assist. Pahl made 17 saves in relief. Penn State's Josie Bothun stopped 30 shots in the defeat.
Quotable
"A really good start to the tournament and the game for us," said head coach Brad Frost. "Scoring four goals in the first period was obviously huge and we came up with a bunch of big kills in the second and third. Penn State really pushed back in the second, but our four-goal cushion was really beneficial."
Notable
⢠Grace Zumwinkle's first period goal was her 93rd of her career, moving her into a tie with Dani Cameranesi for the seventh most in program history.
⢠Minnesota tallied four goals in the first period for the blank time this season.
⢠The Gophers earn their first win over Penn State since 2015 a move to 4-0-0 in the all-time series.
⢠With a goal today, Taylor Heise extended her point streak to eight games ā the longest active streak on the team.
