MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 26, 2022) – The University of Minnesota (3-2, 0-0 B1G) fell short on the road against Virginia (7-0, 1-0 ACC) 73-70 at John Pual Jones Arena on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Mara Braun led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Alanna Micheaux registered 13 points.Â
Braun's double double is the first for the freshman's career, giving the Gophers three different players to secure a double double this season. Braun shot 7-of-16 from the floor and hit 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Amaya Battle stuffed the stat-sheet once again with seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists.Â
The Maroon and Gold jumped on the Cavaliers early, using a 13-2 run to lead 15-6 just over six minutes into the contest with Isabelle Gradwell scoring all five of her points in the game during the run. Minnesota shot 8-of-15 in the opening 10 minutes and led 21-13 heading into the second.Â
It was a tale of two quarters as Virginia scored the first 18 points of the second quarter to grab a 31-21 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first half. Katie Borowicz broke the run with a shot at 3:02 remaining in the half and it jump started a 10-4 run to end the half and head into the locker room down 35-31.Â
The two teams exchanged buckets for the first six minutes of the third quarter, but six straight points from Virginia late in the quarter pushed the lead to as much as 10. Battle and Mi'Cole Cayton hit a pair of threes in the closing 90 seconds to cut the Virginia lead to 51-45 heading into the fourth.Â
After a Micheaux layup to begin the fourth the Cavaliers scored eight of the next 10 points to extend their lead back to 10 with 7:37 to go. Minnesota continued to claw their way back the rest of the way with Braun scoring the next eight points to bring the score to 59-55 with 6:32 to go.Â
Battle hit another triple, and Minnesota paired it with a Micheaux layup to make the score 61-59 with 5:07 to go. Virginia then used a 10-3 run to extend the lead back to nine with 3:06 remaining. Down the stretch the Golden Gophers continued to fight with threes from Braun and Borowicz, and had the ball down one with 19 seconds remaining but a turnover would ultimetly keep the Gophers from getting a shot off in the final moments.Â
In total the Maroon and Gold edged the Cavaliers in field goal percentage at 41 percent (25-of-61), holding Virginia to 40.8 percent (31-of-76). Minnesota hit 8-of-21 from beyond the arc and was 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.Â
