Seven Gophers on offense receive all-conference recognition
The Big Ten announced all-conference performers on offense today and the Gophers had seven players recognized.
All five starting offensive lineman received recognition and so did running back Mohamed Ibrahim and tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford.Â
Ibrahim and center John Michael Schmitz were both named First Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and the media. This is the third time in the last four years that Minnesota has had multiple players named to the First Team.Â
This is the second time in Ibrahim's career that he has been named First Team All-Big Ten as he also received the honor in 2020 when he was the Big Ten Running Back of the Year. Ibrahim joins Gopher greats Laurence Maroney (2004-05) and Bob McNamara (1952 and 1954) as the only running backs in school history to be named to the First Team more than once. Francis "Pug" Lund (1933-34) was listed as a halfback-fullback when he was recognized and Reuben Rosenwald (1909-11) was listed as halfback.
Ibrahim, who played in 11 games, finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards at 1,594 and second in the country in rushing yards per game at 144.9. He tied for second in the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns and tied for third in scoring with 10.4 points per game.Â
Schmitz anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota ranked 17th in sacks allowed at 1.08 per game and tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss per game at 4.33.Â
Schmitz is the first Minnesota center to receive the award since Greg Eslinger was a First Team selection from 2003-05.Â
Guard Axel Ruschmeyer was named Third Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media, while guard Chuck Filiaga was placed on the Third Team by the coaches and was an Honorable Mention selection by the media. Offensive tackles Aireontae Ersery (coaches and media) and Quinn Carroll (media) were named Honorable Mention.Â
Spann-Ford, who caught 40 passes for 481 yards and two touchdowns this year, was named Honorable Mention by both the coaches and media.Â
Quarterback Tanner Morgan also was the team's Sportsmanhip Award honoree.Â
