Men's 800 Free Relay Smashes School Record on Opening Night of Minnesota Invite

11/30/2022 8:12:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – The 2022 Minnesota Invite kicked off with a pair of relay races, including a Minnesota school record, Wednesday night at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The Gopher men's team in the 800 free relay, which was being swum for the first time this season, shattered the school record of 6:20.41 set in 2009.

Sophomores Chris Morris and Bar Soloveychik, junior Kaiser Neverman and freshman Alberto Hernandez finished in 6:16.25, good for third place Wednesday and the fifth fastest time in the country this year based on marks entering Wednesday.

Morris led off with a NCAA 'B' cut of 1:34.22, while Soloveychik followed with a blistering split of 1:32.79. Neverman (1:33.64) and Hernandez (1:35.60) also had impressive showings in the record-setting effort.

The previous mark, set byĀ Alex Wold, Ray Betuzzi, Curt Carlson and Steve Miller, was the second oldest in the Minnesota record books. Only Justin Mortimer's 1000 free record set in 2001 is older.

In addition, the 'B' squad of freshmen Jack Ballard, Connor Groya, Denton Smith, and sophomore Jackson Brown placed 12th at 6:37.44.

In the same event, the women's 'A' team of senior Jordan McGinty, sophomore Hannah Cornish, junior Megan Van Berkom and fifth-year senior Kate Sullivan took sixth at 7:10.24, while the 'B' squad of seniors Rachel Butler and Maggie Summit, and juniors Katia Soudakova and Paula Rodriguez Rivero were 11th at 7:21.49.

Wednesday night started with the 200 medley relay.

The Gopher women secured their top three times of the season, while the men's team had two of its three fastest times this year.

The women's 'A' squad of freshman Ava Yablonski, seniors Emma Lezer and McGinty, and Cornish placed sixth overall at 1:38.02.

The 'B' team of freshman Faith Johnson, juniors Molly Urkiel and Van Berkom, and fifth-year senior Olivia Bloomer came in 14th with a time of 1:40.44, while the 'C' group of Rodriguez Rivero, freshmen Ella Smith and Kaiser Neverman, and Summit was not far behind at 1:41.10, taking 17th.

On the men's side, the 'A' team of senior Desmon Sachtjen, fifth-year senior Max McHugh, senior Shane Rozeboom and redshirt junior Lucas Farrar posted Minnesota's top time this year at 1:25.19, good for a fourth place finish.

The 'B' squad of junior Casey Stowe, freshman Drew Kistler, junior Matt McDonald and freshman Lovro Serdarevic netted a 14th place finish at 1:27.81, the third fastest time on the team this season. The 'C' team of sophomores Tommy McCarthy and Drew Kaelin, senior Isaac Barrera and freshman Connor Groya ended 23rd in 1:30.17.

Action continues tomorrow on day two of the Minnesota Invite with prelims starting at 10 a.m., diving at approximately 1 p.m. and finals scheduled to start at 6 p.m. On the docket for Thursday is the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay, women's 1-meter diving and men's 3-meter diving.
