Gophers Drop Sunday Night Contest to No. 23 Mississippi State

12/11/2022 10:50:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 20 points, but No. 23 Mississippi State had four players in double-figures to record a 69-51 win over the Gophers at Williams Arena.

Minnesota jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, as Mississippi State missed 10 of its first 11 field goal attempts, but the Bulldogs outscored the Gophers 16-6 over an eight-minute span to take an 18-12 lead. Ta'Lon Cooper and Garcia each made three-pointers during a 12-4 Gophers run, which put Minnesota back in front, 24-22, with 3:17 left in the half. But MSU closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 32-24 lead to the locker room. Garcia led the Gophers with 10 first-half points, while Cooper added six points.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 10-2 run to push the lead to 42-26 before Garcia knocked down his third three-pointer and Braeden Carrington followed with his first trey of the night to cut the deficit to 42-32. Once again, MSU put together a 10-2 run to expand its lead to 52-34 with 12:16 remaining and forcing Minnesota to call time out. Joshua Ola-Joseph scored six points during a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to 52-43 at the 9:05 mark. The Bulldogs responded with a 12-5 stretch, bookended by Shakeel Moore three-pointers, to build the lead back to 64-48 with 3:44 left.

Garcia was 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three point-range, but Minnesota finished the night shooting just 15-of-52 (.288). Ola-Joseph had nine points, while Cooper had six points and four assists, and Pharrel Payne had six points and seven rebounds. Carrington grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and added five points for the Gophers.
