Minnesota Moves on With Sweep of SE Louisiana

Carter Booth paced Minnesota with 11 kills

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team swept the SE Louisiana Lady Lions, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 on Friday evening at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, Minnesota advances to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 for the eighth straight year. They'll take on Northern Iowa tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for the right to go to the Sweet 16.

"It was great to have demanded of us the ability to stay in plays and keep grinding," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "I was really happy with how the team performed tonight."

Jenna Wenaas paced the Gophers with 10 kills and 14 digs while Carter Booth had 11 kills and three blocks. CC McGraw led the backcourt with 15 digs while Melani Shaffmaster registered 34 assists, five digs and four kills.

"We just tried to play good over time, and in that third set we were able to outlast them," Wenaas said. "It was great to come away with a win and live to play another day.

As a team, Minnesota (21-8, 15-5 Big Ten) hit .327 with 47 kills, 11 team blocks, 44 digs and four aces. SE Louisiana (25-8, 13-5 Southland) hit .131 with 34 kills, two team blocks, 43 digs and one ace.

Kailin Newsome led SE Louisiana with 13 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The two teams split the first six points before SLU scored two straight to go up 5-3. A 4-0 run by Minnesota put the Gophers up two, led by four consecutive blocks. Arica Davis and Melani Shaffmaster combined for three while Carter Booth and Mckenna Wucherer also got in on the action. An ace by Shaffmaster and a kill from Wucherer put the 'U' up four, 10-6. The Lady Lions cut the lead to three at 10-7 before Minnesota scored five of the next eight to go up 15-10 into the media timeout. Jenna Wenaas and Taylor Landfair combined for four kills in the spurt. SLU sliced the deficit to three at 15-12 before the Gophers scored three of four to go up 18-13, forcing a timeout from SE Louisiana. The Lady Lions wouldn't go away, cutting the lead to as few as two at 22-20. Kills from Booth and Shaffmaster put Minnesota up 24-21, causing SLU to call its final timeout of the set. An attacking error gave the 'U' set one, 25-21. Booth and Wenaas led the Gophers with four kills each while Davis had four blocks.

Set 2: The Gophers came out firing in set two, scoring five of the first six to hold an early advantage. Booth, Landfair and Wucherer posted early kills. The Lady Lions would fight back, scoring five of the next seven and cutting the lead to 8-6. After a Minnesota point off an attacking error, SLU scored two of the next three to cut the lead to 10-9. The 'U' rallied after that, scoring five of the next seven to earn a 15-11 advantage into the media timeout. Booth and Wucherer tallied kills and CC McGraw posted an ace in the run. A kill from Shaffmaster and a block from Davis and Wucherer put the Gophers up 18-12, forcing a SLU timeout. After a kill from SLU, back-to-back Wenaas kills gave Minnesota a seven-point lead at 20-13, leading to timeout No. 2 from the Lady Lions. SLU wasn't done yet, scoring four of five, slicing the lead to four at 21-17. A kill from Wenaas and an SLU attacking error once again put the home team in control, leading 23-17. The Gophers would close out set two, winning 25-18 after Booth's eighth kill of the match. Minnesota hit .286 in the set compared to .182 for SLU. Booth had four kills to lead the 'U.'

Set 3: Minnesota came out on a mission in the third set, tallying seven of the first eight points before the visitors took a timeout. Rachel Kilkelly started it with an ace before Landfair had two kills and Wenaas had a kill and a block with Booth. The Lady Lions responded after the break with five of the next seven points, cutting Minnesota's lead to three at 9-6. The Gophers refused to let it get any closer, exploding on a 7-2 run to take a commanding 16-8 lead. Wucherer posted two kills while Davis, Landfair and Shaffmaster each had one. SLU called its second timeout of the set. SLU would get no closer than nine the rest of the way as Minnesota closed it out, 25-14. Wucherer closed out the match with her eighth and ninth kills of the night.

UP NEXT: Minnesota (21-8, 15-5 Big Ten) takes on Northern Iowa (27-7, 17-1 MVC) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament at Maturi Pavilion.

Notable:
-Under head coach Hugh McCutcheon, Minnesota is now 27-9 in the NCAA Tournament, including a 11-0 record in first round games. He's 17-1 as Gophers coach in the tournament at the Pav.
-The Gophers (11) posted 10+ blocks for the 19th time this season (15-4 record).
-Carter Booth (11) registered her fourth 10+ kill match this season.
-Arica Davis (7) posted her fourth 5+ block match of the season.
-CC McGraw (15) moved up to 1,901 career digs. She became the third Gopher in program history to reach 1,900 digs in her career.
-McGraw went for 10+ digs for the 19th time this season and 104th time in her career.
-Jenna Wenaas posted 10 kills and 14 digs, posting her third double-double of the season.
