Minnesota center is the fifth Gopher ever to be named an All-American in academics and athletics
University of Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz was named to the 2022 Academic All-America football teams selected by the College Sports Communicators today. Schmitz was placed on the Second Team. This honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Schmitz was also named an All-American for his on-field performance this season. He was named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America and was a Second Team selection by the American Football Coaches Association and the Walter Camp Foundation.
Schmitz is the fifth Gopher ever to be named an Academic All-American and also an All-American for his on-field play. He joins Bob Hobert (1956), Bob Stein (1968), Greg Eslinger (2004 and 2005) and Maxx Williams (2014) in being named an All-American for academics and athletics.
Schmitz, who was named First Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media this year, anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota ranked 17th in sacks allowed at 1.08 per game and tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss per game at 4.33.
Schmitz earned his undergraduate degree in Sport Management and had a 3.57 GPA. He has a 3.89 GPA as he pursues his postgraduate degree.
This is also the fifth straight year that Minnesota has had an Academic All-American, which is the longest streak in school history. Minnesota has now had nine Academic All-Americans in the last five years.
