Gophers join Ohio State and Michigan as the only Big Ten teams to have two ore more players named First Team All-Big Ten

The Associated Press announced its All Big-Ten Teams today and the Gophers had three student-athletes recognized. Center John Michael Schmitz and running back Mohamed Ibrahim were named to the First Team, while defensive back Tyler Nubin was a Second Team selection.

The Gophers joined Ohio State and Michigan as the only schools to have multiple First Team selections on offense. Last month, Schmitz and Ibrahim were both named First Team All-Big Ten by the league coaches and media.

Schmitz, who is one of three finalists for the Rimington Trophy, anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota is one of only two teams in the Big Ten (Ohio State is the other) to rank in the Top 25 in the nation in both sacks allowed (Minnesota is T17) and tackles for loss allowed (Minnesota is T23).

Ibrahim, who played in 11 games, finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards at 1,594 and second in the country in rushing yards per game at 144.9. He tied for second in the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns and tied for third in scoring with 10.4 points per game.

On defense, Nubin led Minnesota with four interceptions this year and also finished third on the team in tackles (55) and tied for second in solo tackles (37). He also had two tackles for loss, broke up three passes and forced one fumble. Nubin also recently announced that he would be delaying his NFL aspirations for one more year and that he would be returning to school for the 2023 season.

Minnesota returns to the field on Thursday, Dec. 29 when it faces Syracuse in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
