STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota returns to Williams Arena for the first time since Nov. 17 when the Golden Gophers host the Michigan Wolverines, Thursday, Dec. 8. Tip off is slated for an 8 p.m. start. The Gophers have won two-straight against Michigan and are 41-32 all time on their home court against Michigan, dating back to 1918.Â
• Minnesota faced Michigan just once last season, but it marked a historic event for head coach Ben Johnson. The Gophers defeated the Wolverines, 75-65 in Ann Arbor, Mich., for the first time since 2011. Jamison Battle scored 27 points — with 21 coming after halftime. Payton Willis added 17 points, Luke Loewe 14 and EJ Stephens 13. It marked the first ever conference win for Johnson.
• The last time the Gophers won their home Big Ten home opener dates back to 2021 when Minnesota defeated Iowa, 102-95 in overtime on Dec. 25, 2020. Brandon Johnson made all four of his 3-point attempts in overtime and finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. Minnesota trailed by seven points with 44 seconds left in regulation and outscored the Hawkeyes 29-15 the rest of the way.
• The Gophers are coming off a loss to then-No. 5 Purdue Sunday. Jamison Battle led Minnesota with a season-high 21 points, Ta'Lon Cooper had 15 points and eight assists, and Joshua Ola-Joseph had 10 points. Minnesota was without Treyton Thompson, who did not play due to an illness.Â
• Jamison Battle, who missed the first four games of the season due to foot surgery, produced his first 20-plus game production of the year Sunday. It marked the 12th time in his Gopher career in which the Robbinsdale, Minn., product had over 20 points in a game. In a littler over a year with Minnesota, Battle has scored double-digit points in 29 of his 33 Gopher games played.Â
ABOUT MICHIGAN
• Michigan enters Thursday's game with a 5-3 overall record and set to open its Big Ten season against the Gophers. The Wolverines are coming off a 73-69 loss to No. 17 Kentucky Sunday in London.Â
