Gophers Comeback Falls Short Against Kentucky

12/7/2022 6:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 7, 2022) – The University of Minnesota (5-4, 1-0 B1G) was down seven with 3:43 to go, but another furious comeback fell short against the Kentucky Wildcats (7-1, 0-0 SEC) on Wednesday night at Williams Arena. Four Gophers scored in double figures in the loss with freshman Mallory Heyer leading the way with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Heyer's 17 was paired with Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux's 17 points and nine rebounds. Minnesota also got an impressive performance from Mara Braun who was limited to 14 points but dished out a career high eight assists. Katie Borowicz was the final Gopher over 10 points, scoring 16 points, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while also dishing out five assists and snagging five steals.

Minnesota was ready right from the word go, Micheaux won the tip and Battle drove right and hit a elbow jumper. The game was Minnesota's early, hitting 5-of-5 from the floor to earn a 11-4 lead. Kentucky responded with an 8-0 run that extended to 18-2 by the end of the quarter to lead 22-13, the largest of the game for the visitors. Minnesota clawed back in the final two minutes, scoring eight of the final nine points in the quarter to trail just 23-21.

The second quarter was loaded with runs for the two teams, exchanging 6-0 runs throughout. Kentucky did not give up the lead during the quarter, and just a Jada Walker layup with 14 seconds to go was the difference in the first half, giving Kentucky a 41-39 lead after 20 minutes.

The second half was no different than the second, both teams exchanging blows and neither team leading by more than five points. Minnesota briefly took the lead early in the quarter, but led for just nine seconds before the Wildcats took back over.

In the fourth Kentucky raced out to an eight point lead with 7:06 to go in the game with a trio of layups, but Heyer single handedly kept the Gophers in the game throughout most of the fourth. Heyer scored the first eight points of the quarter for Minnesota and scored 11 in the 10 minute period. Down seven in the final minutes, Minnesota used a 5-0 spurt to cut the lead to two, but Robyn Benton came up clutch for the visitors with a pair of field goals down the stretch to keep the Gophers just out of range in the final minute.

As a team Minnesota out shot the Wildcats at 46.2 percent from the floor on 30-of-65 shooting. The Gophers doubled up Kentucky from beyond the arc with eight makes to the visitors four. Key differences in the game, that favored the Wildcats, was a rebound advantage of plus-13 (46-33), 21 Minnesota turnovers and shooting 6-of-11 from the free throw line.

The University of Minnesota returns to Big Ten action on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. That game can be seen on the Big Ten Network at 8 p.m. and can be heard on KFAN+ and the iHeartRadio app.
