Indoor Track Season Kicks off with Icebreaker Open

12/8/2022 12:50:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers track and field team opens the 2022-23 indoor season with the Minnesota Icebreaker Open on December 9-10, at the U of MN Fieldhouse. The action will serve as an early season look for a majority of the program and help determine the travel roster for the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational in Houston in early January.

About the 2022 Icebreaker Open & Multi
The meet for the Maroon and Gold will be the first for the team since last year's Snowshoe Open on Feb. 18. The majority of the meet will be conducted on Friday with the action starting at 10:30 a.m. with the heptathlon and pentathlon. The field events will start at 2 p.m. with the men's shot put and men's pole vault. The women will kick off the meet on the track at 3 p.m. with the 60m hurdles trials with nine advancing to the final. Friday's action will conclude at approximately 6:30 p.m. with the women's 4x400m relay. Live results can be followed on WayzataTiming.com.

A Quick Gophers 2021-22 Rewind
The University of Minnesota women's program on the track won the team's ninth overall Big Ten indoor championship, and second straight. In fitting fashion the Gophers 4x400m relay won a back-to-back title to seal the team's victory in Geneva, Ohio. Outdoors the Gophers registered a total of nine individual All-America finishes and had two relays earn the distinction as well. The women's program had a total of five All-American individual finishes with both the 4x400m relay and 4x100m relays earning All-America honors. In total Minnesota returns 13 student-athletes that earned All-America honors last season.

Last Time in December
Last season the Golden Gophers competed in two meets on December 3, one at South Dakota State and the other in Arkansas. This season is the third time in four years that the team has competed in December, with the 2018-19 season the team competing on Nov. 30 in South Dakota. Last year returners Amira Young, Janielle Josephs, Nyalaam Jok, Zariyah Black and Tiera Robinson-Jones all won events and will all be in line to compete this weekend for the Maroon and Gold.

Up Next:
The Gophers will have a month between meets when the team competes on Jan. 13. Minnesota will have its top talent down at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invite in Houston, Texas, and a portion of the team at the St. Thomas Invite.
