MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field saw its indoor high jump school record go down on Friday night with Nyalaam Jok leaping over 1.86m (6-1 1/4) at the Minnesota Icebreaker. In total the Gophers won seven events during the meet.
Jok, who was an All-American as a true freshman outdoors last season, rolled through her heights with perfection all the way to her school record-breaking jump. Starting at an opening mark of 1.71m, Jok sailed over six marks before ending her day with three misses at 1.89m. Jok now holds the school record both indoors and outdoors in the event, with her Friday mark matching her outdoor mark that she set at the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight last year.
Jok wasn't the only Gopher to impress with a lifetime best performance on Friday afternoon. Shelby Frank posted the No. 2 mark in program history in the weight throw, tossing a winning mark of 22.21m (72-10 1/2). The mark was nearly one full meter further than her previous lifetime best in the event that she set last year. McKenzie Duwenhoegger was the runner-up in the event with a solid opening season mark of 18.39m (60-4), just shy of her lifetime best in the event of 18.43m.
Minnesota saw another pair of top five times get posted at the U of MN Fieldhouse on Friday with Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black posting the No. 4 and No. 5 times in program history. Black's time came in the prelims, clocking a 8.45 to reach the final. For Maunsbach, her winning time of 8.39 is the fourth-fastest a Gopher has ever run.
Picking up a win on the straight away was Amira Young in the 60m, posting 7.36 in the prelims before dropping an even quicker 7.33 in the final to dominate the field. Minnesota's remaining victories came from Lexy Berger in the pole vault (4.01m), Abigail Schaaffe in the 600m (1:32.03) and Duwenhoegger in the shot put (14.02m).
