Minnesota begins their extended run of matches on the road in Utah
Following a 6-0 home stand at Baseline Tennis Center, the University of Minnesota tennis team takes to the road for the second time this season. The Gophers begin their stretch of away games in Salt Lake City, squaring off against Washington State and the University of Utah. They oppose the Cougars on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., followed by the Utes on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The Cougars head to Utah with a 4-0 record, while the hosts are 7-0.
On Friday, Minnesota equaled their best start in 25 years, as they improved to 9-0 on the year. This achievement was last done by the Gophers in 1997. They will look to surpass that figure in Salt Lake City, attempting to reach double digit victories without a loss.
Previous Match
Minnesota is coming off 7-0 victories against North Dakota and Northern Iowa. Both wins came on Friday, as they swept their second consecutive doubleheader competition. The Gophers continued their early season doubles dominance, as they took the point against both opponents. They held momentum, as they posted wins in each position of both matches. This marks their best start in 25 years, as Minnesota will attempt to reach their tenth win on Saturday.
The Competition
Washington State is 4-0 on the year, and 2-0 against the Gophers across the last eight years. Their last matchup came in 2018, when Minnesota fell 4-3 in Pullman, Washington. Both defeats have come by a one point margin, the prior matchup coming in 2014. The Cougars are in the receiving votes category of the most recent ITA Collegiate Poll.
Utah is 7-0 on the year, 5-0 at home, as they host the trio of undefeated teams on the weekend. The Utes carry a 3-0 record against Minnesota, playing in consecutive years from 2017-2019. All three matches finished 4-3, with one matchup coming in Minneapolis, and two at neutral locations. Sunday will mark their first match in Utah.
