Gophers Back in Action at Maryland

No. 6 Minnesota will face Maryland and Pittsburgh in a Monday tri-meet

The No. 6 University of Minnesota gymnastics team is back on the road this week as it heads to Maryland for a tri-meet against Maryland and Pittsburgh on Monday, Feb. 14. The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. CT and will be available on B1G+. 

Last Time Out
Minnesota last competed on Saturday, Feb. 12 when it hosted Ohio State at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers beat the Buckeyes 197.575 – 195.775 and were once again led by strong performances by Ona Loper and Lexy Ramler. Loper won the all-around title with a career high 39.750 (fourth best score in school history) while Ramler finished second at 39.725, which was her second best score of the year. 

Minnesota's team score of 197.575 was its second best score of the season and seventh best score in program history. The Gophers tallied a 197.650 – the third best score in school history – earlier this year at home versus Michigan.  

Minnesota's 49.700 on the floor was its second best score of the season and second best score in program history. The Gophers recorded a mark of 49.725 at home against Michigan earlier this season. 

Minnesota's 49.475 on the bars was its best score of the season on the apparatus and tied for the fifth best mark in program history. It was also Minnesota's best score since it totaled a school record 49.575 at the Big Five Meet in 2021 and was the team's best score at home since it posted a 49.500 against Nebraska in 2020. 

Gophers In the Rankings
Minnesota comes in at No. 6 overall in the national rankings. The Maroon and Gold is ranked second in the nation on vault, 11th on bars and 182h on beam and second on floor. 

Ramler is ranked in the top-20 in the country in all events, including in the all-around (5), on vault (10), bars (5), beam (2) and floor (18). Loper continues to be nationally ranked as the No. 1 gymnast on vault and No. 9 in the all-around. Mya Hooten is ranked No. 5 in the nation on floor and Maddie Quarles is No. 16 in the country on vault and No. 29 on floor.

B1G Weekly Honors
Most recently, two Gopher gymnasts were honored for their stellar performances against Michigan. Mya Hooten was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week and Ona Loper earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors.

Hooten recorded the second perfect 10 of her career on floor, which is also the second perfect score on the event in program history. In addition to her 10.000 on floor, Hooten scored a 9.850 on vault and 9.800 on bars. This is the second B1G Specialist of the Week award in her career. 

Loper posted a career-high 39.725 in the all-around, highlighted by the fourth perfect 10 of her career on vault. Loper also added a 9.925 on floor along with a pair of 9.900 on bars and beam. This is the fourth time she has been recognized as the B1G Gymnast of the Week.

Scouting Maryland
Maryland hosted Nebraska on Feb. 11 and defeated the Cornhuskers 196.125 – 195.625. The 196.125 was a season high for Maryland, which improved to 3-2 on the year and 1-2 in the Big Ten. The Terrapins scored a season-high 49.300 on the floor, a 49.125 on the bars, a 48.775 on the beam and a 48.925 on the floor. 

Maryland was led by Audrey Barber, as the fifth-year senior placed first on bars (9.900), beam (9.925, career high) and the floor (9.900). Barber, who was named All-Big Ten First in 2021, claimed the all-around title with a career high 39.575. 

Prior to Friday, Maryland's two victories came against Pitt (also competing at Maryland on Monday against Minnesota) and LIU (Gophers will host in a quad meet on March 12 along with Utah State and Temple) at the Pitt Tri-Meet. The Terps posted a score of 192.925 as they beat both Pitt (192.900) and LIU (192.650). 

Maryland suffered a late January home loss to Rutgers, as it succumbed to the Scarlet Knights 195.550 – 194.925. Maryland's other Big Ten meet this year was at Michigan State, where the Spartans topped the Terps 196.875 – 195.950 on Feb. 5 

Scouting Pitt
Pittsburgh last competed on Friday, Feb. 11, in a tri-meet at West Virginia against the Mountaineers and Texas Woman's University. The Panthers placed second after totaling 194.575. West Virginia won the meet with a 195.900, while Texas Woman's University was third with a 194.500. Pitt is now 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the EAGL. 

The Panthers were paced by freshman Jordyn Ewing on Friday, as she made her all-around debut and led the Panthers with a 39.000 to finish third. The Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, native also posted career highs on bars (9.800), beam (9.750) and vault (9.650) on Friday. Two other freshmen – Hallie Copperwheat and Sidney Washington – also competed in the all-around for the Panthers. Copperwheat finished fourth at 38.850, while Washington was fifth at 38.250. 

The Panthers began their home competition this year with a split against Maryland (lost) and LIU (won) at the Tri-Meet at Pitt (referenced above). Pitt then traveled to Denton, Texas for a meet at Texas Woman's University and posted a 195.575 - 192.925 victory. In the meet, Pitt scored a school record 49.200 on the beam, which broke the previous mark of 49.125 that was set in 2018 at home against New Hampshire. 

Pitt lost to both North Carolina and Towson in a tri-meet at North Carolina on Jan. 28 before posting two wins (Alaska Anchorage and NC State) and one loss (West Virginia) in a home quad meet on Feb. 6.

The Gophers return to action at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, when they travel to Toledo, Ohio for the Big Five competition. Minnesota will face Big Ten foes Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan State and Rutgers at the meet.
