Gophers Take Down Northeastern, 3-1

Sam Ireland struck out 10 in 7.1 innings pitched
FORT MYERS, Florida -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers took down the Northeastern Huskies, 3-1, at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla., on Friday afternoon.
Minnesota received a masterful pitching performance from junior right-hander Sam Ireland (2-0), who worked 7.1 innings, tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.
Sophomore reliever Will Semb earned his first save as a Gopher, working 1.2 innings to nail down the victory for Minnesota. Ireland and Semb combined to strikeout 12 Huskies while allowing just six hits and walking three.
Brett Bateman led the 'U' offensively with three of the team's seven hits, including a ninth inning double where he eventually came around to score. Joe Hauser began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single that plated Andrew Wilhite. Boston Merila drove in Ronnie Sweeny with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth before Chase Stanke added some late insurance to Minnesota's 2-1 lead with an RBI double down the right field line to score Bateman in the bottom of the eighth.
Ireland was lights out on the mound through seven innings before getting into some trouble in the eighth. With his team up 2-0 and one out in the top of the frame, NU delivered back-to-back singles, which ended the day for Ireland. Will Semb entered the game and prompty struck out the first Husky he faced. After an RBI single to right plated NU's only run of the game, Semb struck out the next hitter looking to get the Gophers out of a jam and limit the damage to one run. He sent the visitors down handily in the top of the ninth to seal the 3-1 win.
