Carpenter, Wong Lead Way for Minnesota in First Round of the UCF Challenge

Junior Emma Carpenter and senior Geraldine Wong turned in the low Gopher rounds of the day at even-par 72 as the University of Minnesota women's golf team finished the first round of the UCF Challenge at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
As a team, the gophers posted a 3-over 291 in the round and are currently tied for 13th overall. Their total puts them 15 strokes back of leader No. 34 Kentucky and 14 strokes behind No. 6 Wake Forest in second place.

"We had a really competitive and exciting round today," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "To start our stroke play season shooting 291 is really impressive. We talked about process and execution, and today we did those things well. It was a lot of fun to be back on the course and watching these amazing athletes compete."
Notable
Carpenter is tied for 38th place after recording an even-par 72 in the first round. She began the day shooting even-par for eight holes before recording her first birdie to go 1-under. A bogey, followed by three more holes at even-par eventually led way to a finish highlighted by three birdies.
Tied with Carpenter in 38th place is teammate Wong. The senior was consistent all day, and recorded three birdies and three bogeys to finish at an even-par 72.
Joanne Free followed closely behind in a tie for 51st at 1-over par (73). The senior bogied hole No. 17 and No. 4, but came back with a birdie on No. 8.
Junior Leah Herzog was next on the leaderboard for the Gophers, finishing the first round in a tie for 66th. After starting the day with a double bogey, she responded with three birdies and three bogeys to score a 2-over 74.
Grace Curran rounded out the Gophers lineup in a tie for 84th at four-over par (76). The junior recorded one birdie on the 18th hole but found trouble with five bogeys in the round.
