Gophers Shoot One-Under Par in Second Round of UCF Challenge

2/7/2022 8:00:00 PM | Women's Golf

With inclement weather in the forecast for Tuesday, the University of Minnesota women's golf team played all of the second round and most of the third round of the UCF Challenge on Monday.Ā

Teams were originally scheduled to play the third round in its entirety on Tuesday, but will now play between six to eight holes to finish the event.Ā

The Gophers improved on their strong play from the first round and went even lower in round two, shooting a one-under 287 as a team. At the conclusion of the second round, Minnesota was in 14th place in the field.Ā

Quotable
"I am really proud of the way our team played," junior Emma Carpenter said. "We shot -1 as a team and I think that's the best we've done in a long time. I personally struck the ball really well today and I was able to give myself lots of opportunities. I did my best to stay extremely calm the whole day and I think that's what helped me the most."

Notable
Carpenter had the low round of the day for the Maroon and Gold, setting a career-best round score of three-under (69). Her round was highlighted by six birdies, and she is currently tied for fourth in the field with 12 birdies throughout the tournament. Carpenter was tied for 21st (72-69–141) after the second round.

Senior Joanne Free continued to impress for the Gophers, shooting an even-par second round to tie for 50th (73-72–145). She found birdies on holes No. 17, No. 7 and No. 13, but also recorded three bogeys on the day.Ā

Also in a tie for 50th after the first two rounds is Geraldine Wong (72-73–145). After beginning the day on No. 13, she counted a bogey on No. 15 and No. 5. The senior came back with a birdie on No. 8.Ā

Junior Grace Curran shot a one-over second round to tie for 76th (76-73–149). Similarly to Wong, Curran had two bogeys and one birdie on the day.Ā

Fellow junior Leah Herzog finished the second round in 92nd place (74-80–154) after shooting an eight-over.Ā
