University of Minnesota senior Ona Loper was named a finalist for the AAI Award, which is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding senior. Her teammate Lexy Ramler won the award last year.
Loper is one of six finalists for the prestigious award and is joined by Kyla Bryant (Stanford), Derrian Gobourne (Auburn), Lexi Graber (Alabama), Trinity Thomas (Florida) and Natalie Wojcik (Michigan).
The AAI Award is widely considered the Heisman Trophy of women's gymnastics. AAI has been awarding this honor for more than 30 years. NCAA head coaches were asked to submit a nomination for the candidate or candidates of their choice. Last month, 31 nominees were announced and now there are six finalists. Coaches will now cast their vote for who they feel is the top female gymnast in the country and the winner will be announced at the NCAA Championships in April.
Loper is one of the nation's top performers this year and is ranked tied for fifth in the all-around. She is ranked third in the nation on the vault and is tied for 19th on the floor. Loper is also tied for 38th on the bars and tied for 56th on the beam.
She has won 14 event titles this year, which includes four all-around titles. Loper has either set or tied career highs this year in the all-around, vault, bar, beam and floor. Loper has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week three times this year and has earned the honor six times in her career.
