The Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on Friday, April 8 on NHL Network.

MINNEAPOLIS – U.S. Olympian. Big Ten Player of the Year. Hobey Baker Award Finalist.

A day after being named the 2021-22 Big Ten Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection, Gopher men's hockey captain Ben Meyers has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award – given annually to the top men's player in college hockey.

Meyers is the 17th Gopher Hockey player to be named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award while Minnesota players have combined for a total of 22 Hobey Baker Award finalist bids. Four Gophers eventually earned the college hockey's top honor – Neal Broten was the inaugural recipient in 1981, Robb Stauber was the first goalie to win it in 1988, Brian Bonin followed in 1996 while Jordan Leopold was the first player to win the Hobey Baker Award and lead his team to a national championship in 2002.

A native of Delano, Minn., Meyers leads the Gophers with career highs of 16 goals and 36 points in 30 games despite missing five contests to compete with the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. The junior captain led the Maroon & Gold to the program's fifth Big Ten regular-season title this season while the Gophers will defend their Big Ten playoff crown this Saturday against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament championship game at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Meyers takes the ice in every game scenario for the Gophers and leads a team that ranks in the top five nationally on offense (3.6 goals per game) and the top 10 nationally on defense (2.3 goals against per game) – all while playing one of the toughest schedules in college hockey. He has notched points in 21 of his 30 games this season including 11 multi-point performances -- the forward has tallied multiple points in every game since returning from the Olympics. He is also Minnesota's top man on the draw this season – winning 306 of 524 face offs (.584).

The Big Ten Player of the Year and All-Big Ten forward made his first-ever appearance with USA Hockey earlier this year as one of four Gophers selected to compete with the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing along with current teammates Brock Faber and Matthew Knies as well as Minnesota alum Aaron Ness. USA Hockey came in fifth at the international competition while Meyers finished second on the U.S. squad in scoring with four points (two goals, two assists) in four games.

In 98 career games with the Gophers, Meyers has scored 90 points (38 goals, 52 assists). He was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection and the recipient of Minnesota's Mike Crupi Most Determined Player Award as a sophomore in 2020-21 and a Big Ten All-Freshman Team honoree in 2019-20.

Off the ice, Meyers is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2021, 2022) – earning the accolade every year he has been eligible. He is majoring in entrepreneurial management with a 3.54 grade point average from the Carlson School of Management while the Gopher men's hockey program has posted the highest three cumulative grade point averages in team history over the last three semesters.

Prior to joining the Gophers, Meyers spent two seasons with the Fargo Force in the USHL and helped the organization to its first Clark Cup championship in 2018 before earning All-USHL honors in 2019. He previously skated at Delano High School and led the team to its first-ever state tournament appearance in 2017 as a senior captain and Mr. Hockey Award finalist.

The 10 Hobey Baker Award finalists were selected by voting from all 59 Division I college hockey head coaches plus online fan balloting. Next, the 30-member selection committee and an additional round of fan balloting at HobeyBakerAward.com (March 17-27) will determine this year's Hobey Baker Award winner. Criteria for the award are: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.

The Hobey Hat Trick (three finalists) will be announced on Thurs., March 31, 2022 and the Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on Fri., April 8, 2022. The announcement will be televised live on the NHL Network and streamed on the Hobey Baker website at 5:00 p.m. CT.
